WISH-TV 8 losing CBS affiliation and moving it to WTTV 4.

WISH-TV 8 / Indianapolis (“WISH-TV 8”)
WTTV 4 / Indianapolis (“Indiana’s Channel 4”)

UPDATE as of 7:25 p.m. on 8/11/2014: WTTV 4 will not rely on WXIN 59’s on-air talent, neither it’s news department for it’s own news. It will become a separate news department from WXIN 59, even though the 2 are owned by the same company, Chicago based-Tribune Media Company.

ORIGINAL POST: Well guess what? WISH 8 and WTTV 59 are getting new affiliations by start of 2015. On January 1st, 2015, WISH-TV 8 will lose it’s CBS affiliation and will be moved to WTTV Channel 4 (The CW). Unfortunately for WISH-TV 8, this is not a affiliation swap because once WTTV Channel 4 is CBS, it will move the CW affiliation to WTTV-DT 4.2, leaving WISH with nothing and leaving it with Independent status for now. (unless if WISH 8 gets the MyNetwork TV affiliation from WNDY 23, which is highly unlikely at this point.) This changes the Indy TV landscape as now all CBS shows and news starting January 1st, 2015 will be on Indiana’s 4 while WISH-TV 8 will now have to find ways to fill time in it’s schedule. The only way WISH-TV 8 would survive now is by expanding its news operation. Losing CBS and it’s CBS News service is a BIG BLOW for WISH-TV 8 and it’s news department. At the same time though, WISH-TV 8 can expand and add more news in places where WISH-TV 8 never got a chance to do so. For the first time in 58 years, WISH-TV 8 is losing it’s CBS affiliation and it’s being moved to WTTV Channel 4. Apparently, a new reverse retransmission consent compensation from CBS stations and their affiliates have made WISH-TV 8 balk away from CBS’ demands and lose their affiliation status, while under renewing their affiliation agreements. WTTV 4 will be airing local news content, produced by WXIN FOX 59, which already produces the most local news in the state (including Indianapolis itself) and is already gonna launch a new 7:00 p.m. newscast in the fall. FOX 59 just keeps on expanding and it will do so for WTTV 4. Be aware, it will be a FOX station producing local news for a CBS station. Not the first circumstance that will be under this situation involving a FOX station producing local news for a “BIG Three” station (WFFF 44 FOX produces local news for WVNY ABC 22). Btw, WNDY 23 may lose the morning newscast and the nightly 10:00 p.m. newscast if WISH-TV 8 goes Independent.

IMO: This is a shocker. I’ve always thought WISH-TV 8 was so good with CBS. But now, WISH-TV 8 would have to find something to fill all those times that are provided by CBS, including 7:00-9:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., 12:30-3:00, 6:30-7:00 and 8:00-11:00 p.m. and including weekends. But this gives WISH-TV 8 a good chance to expand 24-Hour News 8 and make it into something bigger if they want to. We’ll just have to wait until something else happens.

The 7am hour on WNDY moves to WISH-TV with extra hour added. The 10pm hour also moves to WISH-TV. This will leave WNDY without any news since prior to 1996. It all happens January 1st, 2015.

Not sure what kind of programming otherwise when CBS moves to WTTV 4.1and the CW to 4.2. This TV on 4.2 now is simulcast on WXIN 59.3 and effectively the new home. No word about news positions and branding on the new “CBS 4”.
