WPEC 12 added a 3:00 p.m. newscast today, the first in South Florida and in the state. The newscast is anchored by the station’s long-time veteran Liz Quirantes along with reports from Suzanne Boyd, another long-time veteran and morning (4:30-7:00 a.m.)/noon anchor and Stephanie Watson, one of the recent newcomers who anchors the 5:30 p.m. news on WPEC 12 and the 10:00 p.m. news on sister station, WTVX 34 (which their owners at Sinclair brought WPEC 12 back in 2012 and merged their operations last year.). This newscast is aimed towards women and busy stay-at-home-moms as one of the station’s promos claimed it. WPEC 12 wants to air a 3:00 p.m. newscast because the station that was once a strong second place has fallen badly to third place, ever since WPBF 25 made a surging second place (both behind WPTV 5 which has been the area’s long-time leader). Besides, this is the ONLY newscast on at 3:00 p.m. in the W.P.B. market and in all of South Florida. This happened at the same time as WFLX 29 dropped their 4:00 p.m. newscast from WPTV 5 (was known as FOX 29 News, First at 4:00) in favor of Steve Harvey.
And as of recently, WPEC 12 has done, and is still doing, several news updates for Great 38 WTTA / Tampa-St. Petersburg as that station overhauled it’s image (from MyTV Tampa Bay to Great 38 in 2013) and trying to provide some news content into the station, which now includes a half-hour news and weather/talk/interview program called Great 38 News NOW, weekends at 7:00 p.m. and is hosted by long-time Tampa Bay TV veteran Jenn Holloway (who formerly did the news at Bay News 9). John Discepolo does the news updates for Great 38.
WPEC 12, WTVX 34, WTCN-CA 43 (Cable 15) and WWHB-CA 48 are owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group.
