Hmm… it seems like KLJB 18 wants to start up a news department of their own. All thanks to Grant Broadcast System II selling the station. Here’s why.
KLJB 18 (as well as their sister station KGCW 26) will be sold by Grant Broadcast System II to Marshall Broadcasting, which will then be operated by Nexstar Broadcasting Group afterwards. That may not be news to us here, but what is news for us is that Nexstar is planning to start a news department for KLJB 18. Currently, KLJB 18 works with KWQC 6 to produce a nightly half-hour newscast at 9:00 p.m. for the station. But according to the FCC papers to sell the station, what Nexstar wants to do with KLJB 18 once under their operation, is to expand the current FOX 18, 9:00 O’Clock News to an hour, 7 days a week and in the future, include more local programming which could be a half-hour sports show and possibly a 2-hour morning newscast, something that the Quad Cities doesn’t have at the moment. Marshall and Nexstar want to add more local programming to the station, prior to the expiration of the agreement with KWQC 6 which expires before the end of 2015. So if these plans are true, expect the following:
- The FOX 18, 9:00 O’Clock News goes from 9:00-9:30 to 9:00-10:00 p.m., 7 nights a week. (this one is definitely happening)
- The FOX 18 Morning News would debut from 7:00-9:00 a.m. in 2016 (not confirmed yet, but is in the planning stages)
- A half-hour sports show, more likely on weekends at 10:00 p.m. ? (we’re not sure about this one)
That’s all we got about this situation, for now. There will be more about this within the next year or 2, so stay tuned…
