WATE has expanded 2 of it’s newscasts for Knoxville.

WATE-TV 6 / Knoxville (“WATE 6”)

FIRST ON THE BLOG: The Knoxville media market is getting pretty exciting for us TV news junkies once again. This time, it involves 1 station expanding 2 of their newscasts. Here’s the story…

First, since October 25th of this year (a day before my 19th birthday), WATE 6 has expanded the weekend editions of Good Morning Tennessee. The program now runs from 6:00-8:00 and 9:00-10:00 a.m. Before that, it was just 9:00-10:00 a.m. On Saturdays, the 6:00-8:00 a.m. portion would compete with WVLT 8 while the 9:00-10:00 a.m. portion would have no competition whatsoever. On Sundays, however, 6:00 a.m. is alone, but 7:00 a.m. has competition from WBIR 10. At 9:00 a.m., again with WBIR 10, but only for half-hour because WBIR 10 airs Inside Tennessee at 9:30 a.m. before Meet the Press at 10:00 a.m. There’s no Sunday morning newscast on WVLT 8 as they canceled their Sunday morning newscast in 2013 to make way for CBS’ E/I programming as well as religious programming. Sandwiched in between the 2 portions of Good Morning Tennessee is of course, Good Morning America at 8:00 a.m. But this ain’t the ONLY expansion they made…

… WATE 6 has also recently expanded their weekday 4:00 p.m. newscast to an hour, as it previously was a half-hour newscast before. Called WATE 6 News at 4:00, the newscast now fully competes with Knoxville’s other 2 hour-long newscasts at 4:00 p.m. on WVLT 8 (WVLT Local 8 News, First at 4:00) and WBIR 10 (10 News, LIVE at 5:00 at 4:00).

Very exciting times in Knoxville, indeed.
