FIRST ON THE BLOG: I haven’t checked out this market since July of this year and this may be my last blog post before Christmas.
KCEN 6 has recently added a 4:30 a.m. morning newscast, titled KCEN-HD News Early Texas Today at 4:30 a.m., featuring the 5:00-7:00 a.m. Texas Today team. The broadcast now joins KXXV 25 in which it also recently launched a 4:30 a.m. morning newscast, titled Good Morning Texas Early Edition at 4:30 a.m. There is a difference however between the two…
… KCEN 6’s 4:30 a.m. newscast is not simulcast on their semi-satellite sister station KAGS-LD 23 in Byran – College Station due to the station airing its own local news, which is limited to 5:00-6:30 a.m., 6:00 and 10:00 p.m. only on weekdays. Meanwhile, KXXV 25’s 4:30 a.m. newscast is simulcast on their semi-satellite sister station KRHD 40 in Bryan – College Station, but airs all simulcasts of KXXV 25’s newscasts, with the exception of the weeknight 5:00, 6:00 and 6:30 p.m. newscasts as well as their weeknight 10:00 p.m. newscast as KRHD 40 shows their own Brazos Valley-targeted newscast in that timeslot.
KCEN 6 and KXXV 25 are the ONLY ones in the market to air local news at 4:30 a.m. as KWTX 10 still starts at 5:00 a.m. as well as KAGS-LD 23. KBTX 3 out of Bryan – College Station is the earliest to start at 5:30 a.m.
There is a newscast cut down however. KCEN 6 used to air a morning newscast on their Cozi TV subchannel (KCEN-DT2), which was simulcast on KAGS-LD2. Named Texas Today Update at 7:00 a.m., it was the only station to air news in that timeslot, but no longer does so now, replacing it with Cozi TV programming in its place.
There is just a mix of more and less in Central Texas, I guess.
