WCBD has added more news while moving one as well.

WCBD-TV 2 / Charleston (“WCBD NBC 2”)

FIRST ON THE BLOG: I haven’t checked this market in almost a year, but thanks to a tip from Jeremy (thank you once again!), WCBD has now added more news.

The tip that Jeremy has sent me is that WCBD 2 has recently added a 4:30 a.m. newscast on weekday mornings. News 2 Today at 4:30 a.m. is now the area’s ONLY newscast to start at that time on weekday mornings as WCIV 4 (now on DT 36.2) and WCSC 5 (the market’s long-time leader), still start at 5:00 a.m. This makes the newscast, 3 hours now since it also produces a half-hour newscast at 7:00 a.m. for its CW digital subchannel on DT 2.2 (Lowcountry CW 14). But as I checked the rest of the TV listings, I realized WCBD 2 made some changes in other timeslots that I haven’t realized in a long time. And no, Jeremy didn’t send me any of these following tips…

… WCBD 2 has moved its 12:00 Noon midday newscast to 11:00 a.m. The half-hour newscast, News 2 Midday, is now the ONLY ones on at that time as WCSC 5 does their newscast at 12:00 Noon. WCIV 4 doesn’t do a midday newscast at all. One more thing that WCBD 2 has added…

… WCBD 2 has also recently added an hour-long Sunday morning newscast at 7:00 a.m. to compliment its existing 9:00 a.m. hour on Sundays as well. News 2 Today, just like its weekday counterparts, is on from 9:00-10:00 a.m. Saturdays and now from 7:00-8:00 and 9:00-10:00 a.m. Sundays. With this addition, WCBD 2 now competes against WCSC 5 for Sunday morning news at 7:00 a.m. in the Lowcountry, as WCSC 5 also produces a weekend morning newscast from 6:00-8:00 a.m. And again, WCIV 4 doesn’t produce a weekend morning newscast either.

All of this happening after Media General has now merged with LIN Media. And now WCBD 2 has become a competitor and part of a force to be reckon with, even though WCSC 5 is still the long-time market leader.

Just shows you know that WCIV 4 is now the crap-down station in the market, since neither Allbritton, nor Sinclair has done nothing to change its status. Doesn’t matter, WCIV 4 is crap anyways, IMO. (didn’t mean it in that way)

  1. Allbritton didn’t take very good care of its stations, prior to selling out to Sinclair. FCC decided to impose JSA/SSA ban, resulting in ABC being reduced to .2 sub-channel position in Birmingham and Charleston. Sinclair had to divest Harrisburg to Media General. There had been speculation of WJLA becoming ABC O&O. I don’t see how Sinclair can handle owning and operating 100+ TV stations. Other than acquiring Allbritton stations, they’ve recently acquired Freedom, Four Points, and Fisher stations, as well as a few from Newport, 5 stations from Cox, and so forth.

Charleston… I would assume WCIV put ABC on .1 channel position, if a virtual channel swap with WMMP is unlikely. Not sure if WCIV would keep the ABC 4 branding, or move toward new ABC 36 branding. Birmingham… better scenario, IMO, would’ve been ABC on WTTO 21, and CW/My Network TV on WABM 68. Not sure of the future of ABC 33/40 branding, since WCFT and WJSU no longer broadcast ABC. If WJLA had went the ABC O&O route… ABC would run WJLA the same way its other O&O stations are run… ABC takes good care of its stations, and doesn’t run them into the ground.
