WJBF expands its morning newscast to 4:30 a.m.

WJBF 6 / Augusta, GA (“ABC 6”)

FIRST ON THE BLOG: The expansion to 4:30 a.m. continues and thanks to Jeremy who sent me this tip, its in a smaller-sized market this time. In fact, they have never had this before.

Since January 12th, WJBF 6 has become the first and now ONLY station to air a 4:30 a.m. morning newscast. Titled WJBF NewsChannel 6’s Good Morning Augusta at 4:30 a.m., the program features the regular crew from the 5:00-7:00 a.m. shift, which includes longtime WJBF veteran Mary Morrison and anchor Chris Kane. LIVE VIPIR 6 Weather is done by Meteorologist Ed Bloodsworth and Julie Parise delivers LIVE morning reports throughout the newscast.

Again, WJBF 6 are the ONLY ones up at 4:30 a.m., since WRDW 12 and WAGT 26 are still bringing viewers in the CSRA (Central Savannah River Area), up at 5:00 a.m. while WFXG 54 only produces a primetime newscast at 10:00 p.m. Have I also mentioned that this is history for the #112 DMA market in the USA? And its the home to the legendary golf event, The Masters from Augusta National.

Anyways, the CSRA now has a 4:30 a.m. newscast. Congrats, WJBF 6! Now try to get those viewers up and awake if you can.

  1. 4:30AM start for WJBF 6 is quite an accomplishment. The thing that gets me about WJBF… I’ve noticed most other legacy Media General stations phased out “Media General Station Group Package” (JDK Music) and 2007 graphics package (Giant Octopus), and rolled out “Canvas” (Stephen Arnold Music), and newer graphics (4 different packages: WFLA, WNCN/WJAR, curved/circular style, and iPhone/iPad style). WKRG 5 Mobile/Pensacola got new set and iPhone/iPad graphics, but “Media General Station Group Package” music is still intact. WJBF 6 still has the dated 2007 graphics and “Media General Station Group Package” music. I doubt that the former Young Broadcasting and LIN Media Group stations, and WHTM 27 Harrisburg will be seeing the newer Media General graphics or “Canvas” music anytime soon. Not sure if Media General could and might be working on newer group-wide graphics and music package. Also not sure if WJBF 6 and WAGT 26 will have to disband its JSA/SSA arrangement soon, seeing that other JSA/SSA arrangements are likely to be disbanded by late 2016.

WVTM 13 Birmingham and WJAR 10 Providence will likely be seeing the Media General graphics and music going away soon… WVTM getting Hearst graphics and music, and WJAR getting Sinclair graphics and music.

Media General, along with Gannett, Scripps, Hearst, Sinclair, Raycom, CBS O&O, Fox O&O, NBC O&O, and Sunbeam do the standardized/cookie-cutter approach. Not sure about Nexstar group. Tribune and Graham seems to be borderline standardized/cookie-cutter. Cox, Hubbard, Gray, Meredith, and ABC O&O don’t do the standardized/cookie-cutter approach.

    • WAGT 26 has the newer MG stuff, thanks to the JSA or SSA, whatever it is, agreement.

Gray is standard on most stations with graphics and weather graphics.

Can’t wait to see WVTM 13 with Hearst’s look.

      • JSA stands for Joint Sales Agreement and SSA stands for Shared Services Agreement. Last year, the FCC voted in favor of abolishing the sharing agreements, and spectrum incentive auction. Sinclair’s buying binge brought about this matter. We don’t know yet if the JSA and SSA agreements with WJBF 6 and WAGT 26 will have to unwind. Both stations moved to Augusta West Shopping Center location in 2011, after WJBF left from long time Reynolds Street location, and WAGT left from long time Broad Street location. If both stations are to disband, my assumption would be WJBF staying at Augusta West Shopping Center, and WAGT moving out. I would assume Schurz Communications investing in a newer location for WAGT, with future growth in mind.

      • I know what JSA’s and SSA’s stand for. WJBF 6 should stick to M.G. and have M.G. give WAGT 26 back to Schurz. There are some things that WJBF 6 can’t do like expand their news even further or other things because of the merging operations between WJBF 6 and WAGT 26.
