A lot of changes in Western Colorado, specifically with KREX, KFQX and KGJT.

KREX-TV 5 / Grand Junction, CO; KREG-TV 3 / Glenwood Springs, CO and KREY-TV 10 / Montrose, CO (all branded as “NewsChannel 5”)
KFQX 4 / Grand Junction, CO (“FOX 4”)
KGJT-CD 27 / Grand Junction, CO (“KGJT”)

FIRST ON THE BLOG: I haven’t checked Western Colorado in months and when that happens, expect changes to take place. And they have. Simulcasts are gone, new newscasts were added and all chaos broke loose. (haha JK.) Anyways, it only happened to the Nexstar Broadcast Group cluster of KREX, KFQX and KGJT. Here’s all the details.

First off, KFQX 4 and KGJT 27 no longer simulcast NewsChannel 5 at Noon, NewsChannel 5 at 5:00 and NewsChannel 5 at 10:00 from KREX 5. KFQX 4 also no longer airs a simulcast of KDVR 31 in Denver’s FOX 31 Denver News at 5:30. KGJT 27 also longer simulcast the weekend editions of NewsChannel 5 at 10:00 from KREX 5.  However, KGJT 27 continues to simulcast NewsChannel 5 This Morning (5:00-7:00 a.m.) from KREX 5 and KFQX 4 continues to simulcast FOX 31 Denver News Good Day Colorado from 6:00-9:00 a.m. from KDVR 31 (the first hour is not shown due to Shepherd’s Chapel at 5:00 a.m.). Now for the other stuff…

… The second item is that KREX 5 has recently moved the 5:00 p.m. half-hour newscast on Saturdays to 6:00 p.m. The newscast now makes it the ONLY newscast on at that time in that market as KJCT 8 continues to air theirs at 5:00 p.m. while KKCO 11 airs their weekend newscast at 5:30 p.m. The station continues to produce a 5:00 p.m. half-hour newscast on Sundays.

And finally, KFQX 4 has recently introduced a new half-hour 9:00 p.m. newscast from KREX 5 called NewsChannel 5’s First News at 9:00 on FOX 4. The newscast is the ONLY ones on at that time in the market and is locally-based and locally-produced by KREX 5. KFQX 4 continues to air the weeknight editions of KDVR 31’s hour-long FOX 31 Denver News at 9:00, but now under a half-hour delay, starting at 9:30 p.m., which takes away the 10:00 p.m. news simulcast from KREX 5. And since the new broadcast is only on weeknights, FOX 31 Denver News at 9:00 will continue to air LIVE on weekends at 9:00 p.m.

All of these changes took place since Nexstar brought KREX 5 and KGJT 27 as well as operating KFQX 4 under a LMA in June of 2014.

In other words, its good and bad at the same time. Enjoy your news, Western Colorado.
