KPRC is ready to add a noon newscast, starting March 30th.

KPRC-TV 2 / Houston (“KPRC Channel 2”)

FIRST ON THE BLOG: Well well well. Look who’s #1 in Houston now… KPRC Channel 2. According to Jace Larson, who is one of the station’s investigative reporters, tweeted the following to report on KPRC’s success:

Anyways, KPRC 2 is becoming so successful now that they are ready to add a newscast. Actually, in fact, they are ready to expand a newscast.

@JaceLarson tweeted out that KPRC 2 is ready to expand their midday news block to 90 minutes with a half-hour newscast at noon. Starting Monday March 30th, KPRC 2 will start airing KPRC Channel 2 News at Noon, a brand new half-hour newscast. Even though the station will add the new broadcast, it will keep the hour-long midday block at 11:00 a.m. In other words, KPRC Channel 2 News will now be on middays from 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The new half-hour newscast will displace The Meredith Vieira Show, currently running at 12:00 noon, from that timeslot. We are currently unsure as to what the station will air in the 12:30 p.m. timeslot.

This will make the ONLY houston station to air 90 minutes of midday news from 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and will now put KPRC 2 in competition with KHOU 11 and KRIV 26 with local news at noon, as KPRC 2 already competes with KTRK 13 in the 11:00 a.m. timeslot. This also marks a return to a noon newscast for the station, as they had one until it was moved to 11:00 a.m. in the early-late 2000s.

Btw, Idk if readers of this blog have noticed or not on this post, KPRC 2 has now rebranded the station as KPRC Channel 2 and its news as KPRC Channel 2 News. This displaces the “Local” mandate that was in use by Graham Media Group stations for a while. Just be aware and now this could be the end of the “Local” mandate at Graham Media Group. Only WDIV 4, WKMG 6 and WPLG 10 are left with “Local” in their names, with WJXT 4 using “Local” in their slogan: THE Local Station. KSAT 12 never used the “Local” mandate.

Other than that, thanks Jace for giving us this information. And now KPRC 2 could even be #1 on Midday in Houston. Watch out KTRK 13!

  1. They will probably cancel their 4:00 pm newscast in exchange for an expanded midday newscast. I wouldn’t be surprised if the canceled their 4:00 pm newscast since a lot of stations lately have been adding news in exchange for cutting news in another time slot that’s the way I think newsonomics or stationomics works. Plus there their are already two other newz stations in Houston that have 4:00pm news so if KPRC cut its 4:00 pm news Houston would still have 4:00 pm news like I said I sometimes I think a TV station might get lazy and may not want to broadcast a certain newscast anymore part of the newsonomics or stationomics game.

    • I don’t think KPRC would cut its 4:00 p.m. news for at least 2 reasons.

#1 – The newscast has been around since 1996.
      #2 – It’s #1 according to the January 2015 ratings.

Other reasons… I can’t think of any, but for sure I don’t see KPRC 2 cutting its 4:00 p.m. newscast or any of its newscasts anytime soon.
