WSB cuts an hour of Sunday morning news, but moves it starting next week.

WSB-TV 2 / Atlanta (“WSB-TV Channel 2”)

FIRST ON THE BLOG: WSB is making some moves now and it could impact the Sunday morning news game in Atlanta, depending on how you see it.

Today was the end of the 8:00 a.m. hour of WSB 2’s Channel 2 Action News This Morning at 8:00 a.m. That hour is being replaced by Good Morning America Weekend next week, starting at 8:00 a.m. This will leave the Atlanta market with NO Sunday morning newscast at 8:30 a.m., since WAGA 5 will continue to air The Georgia Gang (WAGA 5’s locally-produced public affairs program), instead of FOX 5 News Good Day Atlanta. But WSB 2 will continue to air 4 hours of Sunday morning news and here’s why…

… Starting next week, WSB 2 will move the Sunday 8:00 a.m. hour to 6:00 a.m. with the Sunday edition of Channel 2 Action News This Morning at 6:00 a.m. The hour will now face off against WAGA 5’s FOX 5 News Good Day Atlanta at 6:00 a.m. for local morning news in that timeslot. The weekend morning newscast on WSB 2 is anchored by Sophia Choi with Severe WeatherTeam 2 from Meteorologist Brad Nitz. So in the end, the Sunday morning newscast will end up as two blocks: One from 6:00-8:00 a.m. and the other from 9:00-11:00 a.m. and then another newscast at Noon (the only weekend newscast at noon in the market) to wrap it up.

So there’s an upside and a downside to this news. But which ever way you look at it, WSB 2 is still gonna be #1.

  1. I remember WSB 2 preempting ABC network shows in the past, and was one of many ABC stations that engaged in that practice. After March 1, the only ABC show being preempted is the Sunday edition of World News Tonight. If WSB 2 was to begin carrying Sunday edition of WNT, WSB would have to cut either 6-6:30PM half-hour or the 6:30-7PM half-hour of its Sunday 6PM newscast. To make up for the loss of either half-hour… I could see WSB looking to eventually add new Sunday 5-6PM news to make up for the loss.
