FIRST ON THE BLOG: An expansion has been made by WHLT. Only one thing about it: It’s actually produced by WJTV.
A few weeks ago, we told you that WJTV 12 expanded their NewsChannel 12 Morning to 4:30 a.m., becoming just the second station in the market to do so. And now, that newscast has been extended to their semi-satellite station WHLT 22 in the Mississippi Pine Belt.
WHLT 22 now carries WJTV NewsChannel 12 Morning at 4:30 a.m. from their sister station. The new half-hour is part of the extension of the 5:00-7:00 a.m. newscast, carried for years on both WJTV 12 and WHLT 22. Even though this is the second station in the Jackson market to do so, this creates history for the very small DMA #167. It has become the first station in the Mississippi Pine Belt to broadcast a 4:30 a.m. newscast since WDAM 7, the only locally-based news operation in the market, still starts at 5:00 a.m.
These is some Pine Belt-based content on the newscast and the station’s only locally produced newscast is weeknights at 10:00 p.m. Other than the local newscast and the morning newscast, the station also simulcasts the Sunday edition of the 10:00 p.m. news and their Sunday sports wrap-up program called the WJTV Sports Zone.
TV news history has now been made in the Mississippi Pine Belt. Congrats WHLT 22 on making that history. But in reality, we thank WJTV 12 for letting it happen.
