Happy St. Patrick’s Day 2015!
Speaking of Green, The CW’s logo is green and WWLP is ready to add The CW. With it, 10:00 p.m. news is coming its way.
Starting April 13th, WWLP 22 will add a 10:00 p.m. newscast on its newly-created CW digital subchannel called The CW Springfield on WWLP-DT 22.2, in which according to New England One and WWLP.com, it would launch on April 1st, 2015 (April Fools’ Day, but this is no joke). We don’t know if it would be a half-hour or a full-hour newscast, neither do we know if it’s just weeknights only or 7-nights a week. What we also don’t know is who will anchor the new newscast.
What we do know is that this will finally provide competition for 10:00 p.m. news in the Pioneer Valley/Western Massachusetts as WGGB 40 already airs a half-hour, 7-night a week 10:00 p.m. newscast for its FOX/MyNetwork TV digital subchannel WGGB-DT 40.2, FOX 6 Springfield (the “6” referring to the cable position), titled ABC 40 News: First on FOX 6 at 10:00.
Also according to WWLP.com, the new CW subchannel will appear on Comcast Channel 16 (SD) and 820 (HD) in the market and will also appear on Charter Cable very shortly.
Bill Pepin, WWLP 22’s President and General Manager:
“We are extremely pleased to offer our viewers a 10:00 p.m. newscast. Historically, 22 News has been the dominant news source in western Massachusetts. A dramatically higher number of local viewers watch 22 News over the alternatives in the market. Up to this point, WWLP was not able to offer a 10:00 p.m. newscast due to our obligations to carry NBC prime programming on our primary channel. Now, our affiliation with the CW on 22.2 allows us to provide our top-rated news to the local market in an earlier late news time period.”
Now, don’t worry. The 10:00 p.m. news won’t replace the 11:00 p.m. news on WWLP 22.1. That will remain right as it has always been. In addition, WWLP 22.2 will repeat Mass Appeal, the station’s lifestyle/talk show that’s originally aired at 11:00 a.m. before 22 News at Noon on WWLP 22.1, weekdays at 1:00 p.m. and that will start April 1st.
Previously, The CW was served in the area by The Pioneer Valley CW: WBQT on Cable 16 until replaced by WWLP. WCCT 20 out of Hartford/New Haven/New London (serving all of Connecticut) has served as the interim CW affiliate in the market and will continue to do so until April 1st when The CW Springfield launches.
If you love competition, but also love WWLP 22, then you will get your share. Congrats WWLP 22, you will now become even more dominant.
