No joke: WTVH is to produce its own morning and noon newscasts.

WTVH 5 / Syracuse (“CBS 5”)

Happy April Fools’ Day! But what I’m about to report is no joke… WTVH is returning to producing its own news for the first time since 2009.

WTVH 5 will produce and air its own morning and noon newscast, starting Monday April 13th. CBS 5 News This Morning (which replaces the super failure CBS 5 News On The Go, which was pre-recorded btw for most of the time) will remain from 5:00-7:00 a.m. and will be anchored by Allison Bybee, who just joined the collaboration that is known as CNY Central: WSTM 3, WTVH 5 and WSTQ-LP 14, last month. Meteorologist Matt Stevens will handle all the weather duties for the morning show and will move from WSTM 3’s Weekend Today in Central New York (Saturdays from 6:00-7:00, Sundays from 7:00-8:00 and weekends from 9:00-10:00 a.m.) to WTVH 5’s CBS 5 News This Morning (Weekdays from 5:00-7:00 a.m.). Both Bybee and Stevens will also handle the brand new CBS 5 News at Noon. This replaces Extra in the current time slot and marks a return to noon news for WTVH 5 since 2012, when Today in Central New York expanded to 4:00 a.m. on WSTM 3 and canceled both of the noon newscasts on both WSTM 3 and WTVH 5. The noon newscast will be on for half an hour.

Allison Bybee, on the new newscasts starting April 13th:

“I believe our new morning show and noon newscasts will be a wonderful addition to the already great line-up of shows airing on CBS 5! Expect to see the news that matters most to you right off the top of each newscast, with a little bit of personality sprinkled in to start your day off right!”

The noon newscast will compete against WSYR 9, the #1 market leader, for local news in that timeslot. The mornings will compete against already long established morning news on WSTM 3 and WSYR 9.

I think I know why this is happening, even though neither TVSpy, nor CNY Central wanna tell: According to CNYRadio.com from a story in 2013, Sinclair Broadcast Group, who now owns WSTM 3 and WSTQ-LP 14 from now-defunct Barrington Broadcasting in 2013 and who also manages WTVH 5 under a JSA/SSA with Granite Broadcasting Corporation (who are looking to sell their broadcasting group, including WTVH 5, except KOFY 20 in San Francisco), does not want to renew the agreement and wants to end it by March of 2017, the end month of the current agreement contract. This agreement ending would push WTVH 5 out of WSTM 3’s building and would more likely have a full-fledgling news operation by themselves, once again. We’ll see how this goes. And this could be the start for WTVH 5 to start producing and airing its own LIVE newscasts, once again.

Once these newscasts start, the Syracuse TV news saga between WSTM 3, WTVH 5 and WSTQ-LP 14 and what could happen in 2017 once WTVH 5 is gone, will continue. Stay tuned to The Changing Newscasts Blog for all the developments.

This just makes this market, more interesting than I would have thought.
