KSTP is ready to give you less at 10:00 p.m. in the Twin Cities.

KSTP-TV 5 / St. Paul – Minneapolis (“Channel 5”)

FIRST ON THE BLOG: I’m a part of the TVNewsTalk family by searching me at “WSVNFan.” I checked the forum today and realized that one station in the Twin Cities is cutting down on one of its weeknight newscasts.

KSTP 5 will be cutting down its 10:00 p.m. weeknight newscast from an hour to 35 minutes. They will do so in order to air Jimmy Kimmel LIVE at the ABC-recommended timeslot of 10:35 p.m. The changes will take place on Monday April 13th, 2015. The newscast, which is anchored by Bill Lunn and Leah McLean, will now fully compete against the other 35-minute weeknight newscasts at 10:00 p.m. in the Twin Cities… WCCO 4, KMSP 9 and KARE 11. According to TVNewsTalk user “Thundershock MN,” he believes that KSTP 5 is cutting down on its 10:00 p.m. newscast, because of a brand new affiliation contract that KSTP 5 signed with ABC earlier this year, that would move Jimmy Kimmel LIVE to 10:35 p.m. and finally follow ABC’s late night schedule, in pattern for the first time in years.

KSTP 5 used to have a weeknight 11:00 p.m. newscast after ABC’s Nightline, but when Nightline was moved to 12:35a ET/11:35p CT, KSTP 5 moved the 11:00 p.m. newscast to 10:00 p.m. in 2013 and thus, created the hour-long 10:00 p.m. newscast. It was unique because it was an hour-long, compared to the competition.

Well folks. Sad to see this goes. I don’t live in the Twin Cities, but if I did, I would be really upset about this.

  1. KSTP-TV 5 is owned by Hubbard Broadcasting. KOB-TV 4 the NBC Affiliate In Albuquerque where I live in the same city where Breaking Bad takes places is also owned by Hubbard Broadcasting. I hope KOB-TV 4 does not decide to cut local newscasts in Albuquerque. KOB-TV 4 back in 2008 had a 4:00pm newscast and back in 2008 they cancelled the 4:00pm newscast kind of like what KSNV NBC 3 in Las Vegas did earlier this year. I was pretty upset when KOB cancelled its 4:00pm newscast back in 2008. KOB-TV said they cancelled the 4:00pm newscast because of the bad economy. Judge Judy is now on at 4:00pm on KOB-TV which I do not understand because its cost KOB-TV more money to have a national top notch syndicated program on like Judge Judy who should be a Supreme Court Justice then it does for KOB-TV to have a local newscast at the same time. I heard Judge Judy makes over 35 million a year. Sometimes I think KOB-TV did not just want to have a 4:00pm newscast anymore and they used the economy as an excuse to cut the newscast. I think all of it had to do with news consultants and newsonomics, and stationomics. Sometimes I don’t understand why A TV station cuts back news when the economy is bad. News is always going to happen. There still is going to be crime, bad weather, fires, and natural disasters when the economy is bad. If anything there is more bad news when the economy is bad then when we are in good times. I watch KRQE-TV 13 the CBS affiliate for 4:00pm news because KRQE-TV is the only TV station in the ABQ Market with 4:00pm news. KOB-TV local news content through the last 8 years has gotten worse. KOB-TV use to have the top rated 10:00pm newscast and morning news for years but now KOB-TV has been last place for local news for the past 8 years. KOB-TV use to be the best station for local news they were the news station that you could count on in the ABQ Market for real local news. Before KOB-TV use to have serious hard news no real fluff or entertainment news. In the past years they have started to report more infotainment and fluff and more national and international news on their local newscasts. KOB-TV has sold out on its old news values. I think KOB-TV in the past few years has been getting advice from news consultants and I think is why KOB-TV newscast quality has gone down. Like I said I think news consultants do not care about local news all they care about is how to make a profit and they give advice to TV stations on how to manage their news and the newscasts go down the tubes because of it. Tom Joles the top news anchor who has worked at KOB-TV for over 25 years got into a scuffle with the news director and was suspending from the air for a week. It was said that Tom Joles got into the scuffle because he did not agree with the way the newscasts were being managed. I know KSTP still has a 4:30pm newscast and they still had a 4:30pm newscast back in 2008. I don’t know about KSTP TV news content but they are manged by the same company as KOB-TV is managed by. Hubbard Broadcasting though is one of the much smaller Broadcasting companies in the Grand United States of America. Hubbard Broadcasting is a family owned and operated company something you see very few of these days in the news business. Hubbard Broadcasting is not a huge broadcasting company like Sinclair, Media General, KRQE-TV is owned by Media General, Nexstar, Gannet, etc. I just hope KSTP-TV cutting its newscast down does not affect KOB news since KSTP is owned by the same company that owns KOB-TV. Do not be surprised if sometime Hubbard gets bought out by a larger media company.
