KJCT and KKCO are making moves in Western Colorado.

KJCT-LP 8 / Grand Junction, CO (“KJCT 8”)
KKCO 11 / Grand Junction, CO (“KKCO 11”)

FIRST ON THE BLOG: Moves are happening across Western Colorado and KFQX/KREX are not a part of it. It all involves the Gray Television duopoly of KJCT, the ABC/CW affiliates and KKCO, the NBC/Me-TV affiliates for Western Colorado. Here’s the story:

KJCT 8 has discontinued its nightly 5:00 and weeknight 6:00 p.m. newscasts, in favor of a half-hour nightly newscast at 5:30 p.m. The 5:00 p.m. newscast has been replaced by ABC World News TONIGHT and the 6:00 p.m. newscast replaced by The Big Bang Theory.

Meanwhile, KKCO 11 has discontinued its nightly 5:30 p.m. newscast in favor of nightly 5:00 and weeknight 6:00 p.m. newscasts. KKCO 11 now airs NBC Nightly News at 5:30 p.m. and has moved its weeknight 6:00 p.m. newscast from Me-TV Western Colorado (KKCO-DT 11.2) to the main KKCO 11 channel.

In other words, a role reversal, if you wanna call it, of moves made in Western Colorado. And that’s the story. Enjoy, Western Colorado.

  1. What ratings value does a TV station get by cutting local news and puting replacing the news with re runs or old seasons of comedies. I wish these stupid newsominics or statinomics would stop these newsenomics or stationomics is the worst move any I mean any TV station can do. I wish stations would quit cancelling local newscasts. I think TV stations canceling local newscast is an insult and disservice to the viewers and community. If it were up to me I think any TV station that cancels local newscasts should be penalized with a deterrent tax. Maybe If a deterrent tax were imposed if a TV station decided to cancel a newscast the station would think twice before doing it. I think TV stations need to be held more accountable on the kind of programming they put on. Sorry to have more FCC over site for TV stations but if there are no rules in place TV stations would do what they want without answering to the public. As you know TV stations are suppose to be the public airwaves and they are suppose to serve the interests of the community not interpretations. I think cutting news does not serve the communities interests. I also take it the Grand Junction market will not have any news at 4:00pm anytime soon since one station is downsizing its newsblock.

    • I think it feels strange because it used to be the opposite. KJCT would have News 8 at 5 and 6pm with WNT in between the two at 5:30 now it’s WNT at 5pm, KJCT News 8 at 5:30 and BBT at 6pm and for KKCO it used to be NBC Nightly News at 5pm, 11 News at 5:30 and syndicated programs at 6pm. Now it’s NBC 11 News at 5, NBC Nightly News moves to 5:30 and NBC 11 News at 6pm. As far as Western Colorado receiving a 4pm Newscast I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

      • 4pm News in Western Colorado? That’s never going to happen.

Also, KKCO 11 is owned by Gray Television, which also owns KJCT 8. That’s why they made these moves.

  2. With a single company owning two TV stations in one market like Gray Television owning both KJCT and KKCO they will unfortunate cut back news on other stations. This is the result of media deregulation and newsonimcs and stationomics. I think media consultants play a huge role on how local news is shaped and the media consultants concern is about money not about serving the community. Media consultants attitude is hell with the people at the expense of profit.
