Western Mass News makes it debut. Its from WGGB and WSHM-LD.

WGGB-TV 40 / Springfield – Holyoke, MA (“ABC 40”)
WGGB-DT 40.2 / Springfield – Holyoke, MA (“FOX 6”)
WSHM-LD 3.5 / Springfield – Holyoke, MA (“CBS 3 Springfield”)

WGGB and WSHM-LD have consolidated their news operations under one roof. If you want the proof, then look at this image:

The new name for the combined news operation between WGGB 40 and WSHM-LD 3.

Starting yesterday at noon, WGGB 40 and WSHM-LD 3 are now calling their newscasts as Western Mass News. The newscasts are produced by WGGB 40 at their headquarters at 1300 Liberty Street. WSHM 3 closed their studios at Monarch Place and moved over to Liberty Street for the move. The newscasts on both stations are now under one brand and changes were made.

First off, all newscast times were kept. WGGB 40 now simulcasts the weeknight 6:00 p.m. and daily 11:00 p.m. newscasts with WSHM 3 and the news department has replaced the rebroadcast of 40 in the Morning on FOX 6, with 2 LIVE hours. Which means, starting today, WGGB-DT 40.2 now airs Western Mass News – 40 in the Morning, LIVE from 7:00-9:00 a.m., making it the ONLY LIVE news broadcast at that time in the Pioneer Valley.

This all took place after WGGB 40 was sold by Gormally Broadcasting and bought by Meredith Corporation for $53.8 million and since WSHM is broadcast under low power, the FCC granted approval for the two stations to be owned and merged. And that’s what leads to yesterday as the new news operation begins.

Here is their newscast schedule:

Weekdays:

  • 5:00-7:00 AM: Western Mass News – 40 in the Morning on ABC 40 and FOX 6
  • 7:00-9:00 AM: Western Mass News – 40 in the Morning on FOX 6
  • 12:00-1:00 PM: Western Mass News at Noon/12:30 on ABC 6
  • 4:00-5:00 PM: Western Mass News at 4:00/4:30 on CBS 3
  • 5:00-6:00 PM: Western Mass News at 5:00/5:30 on ABC 40
  • 6:00-6:30 PM: Western Mass News at 6:00 on ABC 40 and CBS 3
  • 10:00-10:30 PM: Western Mass News at 10:00 on FOX 6
  • 11:00-11:35 PM: Western Mass News at 11:00 on ABC 40 and CBS 3

Weekends:

  • 7:00-8:00 AM: Western Mass News – 40 in the Morning on ABC 40
  • 9:00-10:00 AM: Western Mass News – 40 in the Morning on ABC 40 and FOX 6
  • 6:00-6:30 PM: Western Mass News at 6:00 on ABC 40
  • 10:00-10:30 PM: Western Mass News at 10:00 on FOX 6
  • 11:00-11:35 PM: Western Mass News at 11:00 on ABC 40 and CBS 3

And that’s the merged news operation schedule, with the newscasts from both WGGB 40 and WSHM 3. There could be more in the future for both stations or for either one. Also, a new set was made to house the new operations under WGGB 40’s studios.

WGGB 40 and WSHM 3’s Vice President and General Manager Klarn DePalma:
“Bringing these stations together will enable us to bring more resources to our news coverage, more unique content to our viewers and more choices for our advertisers. This demonstrates our commitment to local news in Western Massachusetts. We believe this is the future of local media in this market and we’re proud to be leading the way.”
WGGB 40 and WSHM 3’s News Director Patience Hettrick:
“It truly is an exciting time in Springfield and throughout Western Massachusetts. Our team has been working extremely hard to create a unique and powerful brand to serve our viewers.”

I say more news is good news, unless if you’re reducing competition. But since the low-power station was actually producing less news than the others, I say this is a good move.

  1. Look for some cuts in newscasts somewhere down the line on WSMH, WGGB, or FOX 6 the norm with TV news operations consolidating just like the games they were playing with the news that happened in Grand Junction with KKCO and KJCT both as a result of merged news operations and the same company owning both TV stations.

    • But unlike KKCO/KJCT in which all they did was move newscasts, WSHM-LD CBS 3, WGGB ABC 40 and WGGB FOX 6 actually expanded newscasts with a LIVE 7:00-9:00 a.m. newscast on FOX 6. I have a feeling more is coming, either to CBS 3 or to FOX 6.
