FIRST ON THE BLOG: Southeast Texas is a weekday 4:30 a.m. morning news market now… thanks to KFDM.
Since last week (as of this post), KFDM 6 has added a 4:30 a.m. half-hour morning extension of their morning newscast, The Morning Show. The newscast now competes with KBMT 12 (ABC – 12.1/NBC – 12.2)’s already expanded 12 News Daybreak at 4:30 a.m. The newscast is anchored by Melissa Daigle and long-time KFDM 6 veteran Dan Gresham with KFDM Channel 6 Weather from long-time SE Texas Meteorologist and KFDM 6/KBTV 4 veteran, Dana Melancon and LIVE Reports from around the area with James Ware.
With the 4:30 a.m. newscast expansion, The Morning Show now becomes a 4-and-a-1/2-hour-long morning program, with the first 2 & a 1/2 hours on KFDM 6 and the last 2 hours (7:00-9:00 a.m.) on sister station KBTV 4 (FOX). KFDM 6 only competes with the first 2 & a half hours with KBMT 12 while the 7:00-9:00 a.m. morning news on KBTV 4 is the ONLY ones on in the area.
So more morning news on KFDM 6 means more local news coverage in Southeast Texas. So now there’s a bigger “Morning Show” on KFDM 6 and KBTV 4.
FIRST ON THE BLOG: WSIL has always been a last-place ranked station in the Jackson Purchase, Bootheel and Southern Illinois, a.k.a. Paducah, KY – Cape Girardeau, MO – Harrisburg, IL. It looks like WSIL is ready to fight in the news competition by adding a weekend morning newscast.
Starting Saturday July 11th, 2015, WSIL 3 (and full-time satellite station KPOB 15) will be adding a 1-hour weekend morning newscast. News 3 This Morning will be airing from 6:00-7:00 a.m. and will be effectively competing against long-time leader KFVS 12 (CBS)’s The Breakfast Show and the Sunday edition of WPSD 6 (NBC)’s Local 6 Today. We don’t know as to who will anchor the new newscast or who will deliver the weather, but we will believe that this will be WSIL 3/KPOB 15’s first foray into weekend morning news.
Even though all three stations compete against one another, all three stations focus on different areas of the market. WSIL 3 is focused more on Southern Illinois, because of the station’s license in Harrisburg, while WPSD 6 focuses more on Western Kentucky, since its based in Paducah. KFVS 12 mostly covers Southeastern Missouri, since the station is licensed to Cape Girardeau.
We have no other details regarding about this, but this is good news for the usually last-placed and struggling station.
FIRST ON THE BLOG: KSNV is now owned by Sinclair. Make sure you remember that, because KSNV has modified its news schedule… AGAIN. This time, its weekend morning newscasts.
KSNV 3 has modified its weekend morning newscasts by discontinuing its Saturday hour-long 6:00 a.m. and half-hour 9:00 a.m. newscasts, but will add an hour-long newscast on Saturdays at 7:00 a.m., starting Saturday July 4th, 2015. Before, the 6:00 a.m. hour would compete against KVVU 5 (FOX)’s FOX 5 News This Morning and KTNV 13 (ABC)’s Channel 13 Action News – Good Morning Las Vegas. The 9:00 a.m. half-hour would be by themselves. Now, the 7:00 a.m. hour would still compete against KVVU 5, but not with KTNV 13, since they would air ABC’s Good Morning America.
Then, KSNV 3 discontinues just the half-hour Sunday morning 9:00 a.m. newscast while keeping the hour-long 6:00 a.m., as it will add the 7:00 a.m. hour as well on Sunday June 5th, 2015. The 6:00 a.m. hour would compete against KVVU 5, KTNV 13 and the half-hour 6:00 a.m. newscast from KLAS 8 (CBS). The 7:00 a.m. hour, again, would only compete against KVVU 5.
Again, all these changes start this weekend, the July 4th weekend. The newscast is anchored by Christine Kim.
The modified schedule is coming in to KSNV 3 and viewers will be affected. So, adjust your schedules accordingly if you do watch KSNV 3 in the morning.
Another week of newscasts debuting this week and we go to three places from around this country to deliver what will be debuting this week. Again, by day and time order (in EST):

12:00-12:30 PM: CBS 3 Eyewitness News at Noon
KYW in Philadelphia. Talk Philly and CBS 3 Eyewitness News This Morning on The CW Philly 57 have been canceled in favor of devoting resources to the new half-hour noon newscast that will be making its return to KYW 3 for the first time since 2009. This will compete against WPVI 6 (ABC)’s hour-long Channel 6 Action News at Noon and WFMZ 69 (Ind. Allentown)’s half-hour 69 News at Noon.
10:00-10:30 PM: WGNT News at 10:00 – Powered by NewsChannel 3
WGNT in Norfolk. The newscast was previously only on weekends, but will now expand to weeknights and become a 7-nights-a-week, nightly newscast and its produced by their sister station WTKR 3 (CBS). This will provide an alternative to the hour-long WAVY News 10 at 10:00 on FOX 43 on WVBT 43, which is produced by their sister station, WAVY 10 (NBC).

KLAF-LD in Lafayette, LA. KLAF 46 will be adding its own local news department, focused on Lafayette and Lousiana’s Acadiana, starting in 2016. Until then, simulcasts of sister station WVLA 33 (NBC) in Baton Rouge will be provided as the local news department is being built from scratch. KLAF 46 will switch to NBC, this Wednesday, July 1st. Sister station KADN 15 will also carry it on KADN 15.2 and move the MyNetworkTV affiliation to KADN 15.3. KADN 15.1 will remain as a FOX affiliate.
KLAF 46 should debut its local news department on January 1st, 2016. If not, then at some point in Q1 2016 and the local news department will effectively compete against KATC 3 (ABC)’s KATC 3 – Acadiana’s NewsChannel and KLFY 10 (CBS)’s KLFY News 10. Eventually, KLAF 46 will also take over production of the half-hour, weeknight-only FOX 15 News at 9:00 on their sister station KADN 15 and possibly add more local newscasts to the station as well. We’ll find out and see what happens.
FIRST ON THE BLOG: Weekend morning news is rare in Lousiana’s Acadiana. But that’s because, there’s only one station that’s doing so. And that station is KLFY. And recently, their long running morning show has expanded its Sunday morning edition by another hour.
KLFY 10 has recently expanded the Sunday morning edition of Passe Partout (don’t ask me why they call it that, I have no idea since I’m not from Lousiana’s Acadiana) to two hours. The broadcast is now seen on Sunday mornings from 6:00-8:00 a.m. and is the ONLY weekend morning newscast in the area. Its also the ONLY weekend morning newscast that serves Lake Charles, since KLFY 10 can reach Southwest Louisiana easily.
The broadcast is just like the weekday morning (4:30-7:00 a.m.) and Saturday morning (5:00-6:00 a.m.) editions with local news and weather to start your day. According to Wikipedia, Passe Partout, as well as its weekday noon show Meet Your Neighbor, have been around on KLFY 10 for over 50+ years, with the same titles and everything. Bob Moore and StormTracker 10 Weather with Meteorologist Chris Cozart deliver the weekend morning news and weather for Passe Partout.
Enjoy the new hour, Acadiana and Southwest Louisiana. KLFY 10 gives you more.
FIRST ON THE BLOG: We first reported that KYW-TV will be returning to a noon newscast, starting this Monday. Well, apparently, with every additional newscast, there can sometimes be a cutback. But this one will be a shocker because for the first time since 2002, WPSG will NOT have a weekday morning newscast.
Yesterday (6/26/2015) was the last day for CBS 3 Eyewitness News This Morning on The CW Philly 57. The 2-hour weekday morning newscast from 7:00-9:00 a.m. was anchored by Ukee Washington and Erika Von Tiehl (who used to work in my home market for WFOR 4) with CBS 3 Eyewitness Weather from Meteorologist Katie Fehlinger (who also used to work for AccuWeather).
It will be the first time since 2002 that WPSG 57 will NOT have a local weekday morning newscast. In 2002, the station started airing KYW Newsradio 1060 This Morning, a hybrid program between their sister station KYW 3 and all-news radio station KYW Newsradio 1060. The program was then canceled in 2005 for WakeUPNews, which was on from 5:00-9:00 a.m. and at that time, the name was referenced to the then-UPN network, but then changed the name slightly in 2006 to de-empathize the UPN name as the station became an O&O station of The CW and became Wake Up News. The program would be produced by Traffic Pulse from May 2005 until June 2009 when the program was canceled in favor of KYW 3 producing a 2-hour morning extension of CBS 3 Eyewitness News This Morning and now after 6 years, the program will be canceled.
What will be replaced in its 7:00/8:00 a.m. timeslots? Paid Programming at 7:00 a.m. and The Better Show at 8:00 a.m. I will guess that the program was canceled due to low ratings and poor viewership against WTXF 29 (FOX)’s FOX 29 News – Good Day Philadelphia and WFMZ 69 (Ind. Allentown)’s 69 News at Sunrise.
Don’t be surprised about this move. I knew it would happen eventually and it has finally done so.
FIRST ON THE BLOG: KYW is about to do something that it should have never done back in fall of 2009… replace the noon newscast with Talk Philly, a local talk show. In 2015, they have finally learned their lesson and is bringing back their noon newscast.
Today, Talk Philly has been canceled after almost 6 years (but like really… come on. You can’t compete against WPVI 6’s Channel 6 Action News at Noon.) and come Monday, June 29th, 2015, KYW 3 will be airing CBS 3 Eyewitness News at Noon… AGAIN. The newscast is returning after a 6-year hiatus and will feature the latest local news and weather during the 12:00 Noon timeslot, which it will compete against long-time leader WPVI 6’s hour-long noon newscast and WFMZ 69 (Ind. Allentown)’s half-hour 69 News at Noon.
The newscast will probably be anchored by either one of two of KYW 3’s long-time veterans, Ukee Washington or Pat Ciarrocchi, or could be anchored by both again until the newscast was canceled in 2009 for the ill-failed talk show (that I couldn’t believe the show lasted for that long). CBS 3 Eyewitness Weather will be delivered by Meteorologist Kate Bilo (who used to be a Meteorologist for AccuWeather).
This should’ve been done a long time ago by keeping the noon newscast and not showing Talk Philly. But its better late than never and I’m glad KYW 3 learned their lesson. (Because otherwise, I would have turned to KYW Newsradio 1060, instead of KYW 3.)
