WKYC discontinues its weekend noon newscast and shortens its Sunday morning news.

WKYC 3 / Cleveland (“WKYC Channel 3”)

FIRST ON THE BLOG: I’ve believe this has been done weeks ago, but today I just found out.

WKYC 3 has discontinued its weekend noon newscast, something that the station has had since the 90s. It was the ONLY midday newscast, during the weekends in Northeast Ohio. With that discontinued, this leaves WJW 8 as the ONLY weekend midday newscast in the area, as it broadcasts a Sunday half-hour newscast at 11:00 a.m.

Also, WKYC 3 also shortened its Sunday morning newscast by 30 minutes. They cut the Sunday 10:00 a.m. half-hour and now only broadcasts one hour after The Today Show at 9:00 a.m. Meet the Press now takes over the 10:00 a.m. timeslot.

As if things weren’t starting to fall away from WKYC 3, they just had.

  1. WKYC-TV should get a 5:00pm newscast. WXIA-TV another Gannett owned station in Hotlanta had an evening news block like WKYC-TV does now with a 6:00pm and 7:00pm newscast and WXIA expanded its evening news block with an hour long 5:00pm newscast. For years WKYC was the only station in Cleveland to have Saturday and Sunday Morning newscasts before WOIO, WEWS, and WJW got into the weekend morning news business. I wonder if WKYC is last place in Cleveland because WKYC at one time years back did have a 5:00pm newscast. I think WKYC might have seen better days.

  2. WKYC is in 3rd. Plus all the stations in Cleveland have had weekend morning newscasts before WKYC was the only one.

WKYC was first but WJW was an early adder as was WEWS. WJW and WEWS cut back on weekend morning for financial reasons.

WKYC will not add a 5pm, the market has too many options as is. They do better at 7pm being the only station then they did competing with WEWS and WJW back in the day (WOIO didn’t launch a 5pm newscast till later).

  3. You can never tell about Gannett/Tegna. I assume WKYC may eventually add 5PM news, despite not having 5PM newscast for a long time… and hopefully keep 7PM intact. WXIA brought back its 5PM news after 12-year hiatus, and canceled Noon and 7PM. Hopefully WUSA keeps its 7PM newscast intact for a while.
