KOAA adds early evening weekend news at 4:30 p.m.

KOAA-TV 5 / Pueblo – Colorado Springs (“KOAA 5”)

FIRST ON THE BLOG: If you’re looking for even earlier early-evening weekend news in Southern Colorado, well… you got it. But after all, KSL-TV in Utah already does this as well.

KOAA 5 has recently added a half-hour weekend newscast at 4:30 p.m. Titled News 5 Weekend at 4:30, this is the ONLY local newscast on, at that time, in Southern Colorado, as KRDO 13 doesn’t start their weekend news till 5:00 p.m. and KKTV 11 doesn’t start theirs till 5:30 p.m. Don’t worry, KOAA 5 will continue to air their 5:30 p.m. weekend newscast, as they always have been, which is right after NBC Nightly News at 5:00 p.m.

Yes, this is rare on the West Coast, but you already have KABC 7 in Los Angeles with weekend news at 4:00 p.m., KNTV 11 in the Bay Area with Sunday news at 4:30 p.m. and, just as I mentioned before, KSL 5 in Utah with weekend news at 4:30 p.m. KOAA 5 is now on that list and they can do so because NBC Sports is broadcast at an earlier time than on the Eastern Time Zone, thus allowing for much earlier early evening news during the weekend on the station.

So there you go, Southern Colorado. Much earlier news on the weekends. Congrats, KOAA 5.

  1. I don’t understand why the Colorado Springs Market has 2 TV stations with local news at the 4:00 pm hour KRDO-TV 13, and KKTV-TV 11 with 4:30 pm news but a TV Market like Albuquerque where I live there is only one TV station with 4:00 pm news KRQE-TV 13. KOB-TV back in 2008 use to have a 4:00pm newscast to compete with KRQE but it was cancelled because of the recession. In my opinion I don’t think the recession had anything to do with KOB-TV 4:00 pm newscast because cancelled I think it was just used as an excuse. In my opinion I think KOB-TV just didn’t want to have a 4:00pm newscast anymore. Because Judge Judy is on now at 4:00pm on KOB-TV and it cost the station more money to have Judge Judy on then a local newscast. I think it was a pure stationomics or newsonomics deal is why KOB-TV does not have a 4:00 pm news anymore. Colorado Springs is a smaller TV Market then Albuqueque. Or like Boise ID, The Boise TV Market has 2 TV stations with 4:00 pm news KBOI-TV 2, and KTVB-TV 7 and the Boise TV Market is a TV Market in the 100 plus category. I don’t understand how smaller TV Markets then Albuquerque can support more TV stations with 4:00 pm news. The Tucson TV Market is a city comparable to Albuquerque and its a smaller TV Market but there are 2 TV stations with 4:00pm news in Tucson KVOA-TV, and KOLD-TV.

  2. KSL-TV use to have a full time weekday 4:00pm and 4:00pm newscast a few years back but it was cancelled in favor of more expensive syndicated programming probably a pure newsonimics or stationomics deal. I think KSL-TV probably just did not want to have 4:00pm anymore so they would be willing to pay more for syndicated programming on their station in favor of not having to work their news crews to anchor an extra newscast.

  3. KSL-TV should also consider breaking its network affiliation from NBC when the station is up for contract renewal and become Independent because KSL-TV always has a falling out with NBC prime time programming and sometimes chooses not to air certain NBC programming to be inappropriate because of KSL-TV LDS Church views. If KSL were to go indpendent they can pick and chose what programming to their liking to put on their station without a falling out from the network. If KSL were to go Independent I think the station would look like KTVK-TV in Phoenix, KRON-TV in San Francisco, WJXT-TV in Jacksonville, and WISH-TV in Indy. If KSL were to go independent it could expand local news at 7:00a and 8:00am and have KSL-TV News at nine. In the alternate WMFL Timeline KSL-TV is listed as an independent station owned by WMLF Corperation. KSLC ** Channel 5 (Independent; KSLC 5 Eyewitness News)

  4. Judge Judy gets better ratings in almost every market at 4pm, except Pittsburgh. It almost always does better then a newscast on another station.
