FIRST ON THE BLOG (other than VARTV.com): It looks like the Hampton Roads market will get an alternative 10:00 p.m. weeknight newscast, thanks to WGNT. It will be powered by WTKR though.
Starting Monday, June 29th, 2015, WGNT News at 10:00 – Powered by NewsChannel 3, will be expanded to weeknights on the station that has its news provided by sister station WTKR 3 (CBS). The newscast only been on weekends for a few years before WTKR 3 has now decided to expand the program to weeknights. According to VARTV.com, the weeknight edition will be anchored by Hampton Roads TV veteran Les Smith and former WTKR 3 morning anchor Laila Muhammad. Both will be joined by VIPIR 3 Weather‘s AMS & NWA/Sealed Chief Meteorologist Patrick Rockey. Together, they already are a part of the half-hour WGNT News at 7:00 – Powered by NewsChannel 3 and now, all three will also helm the new half-hour weeknight 10:00 p.m. newscast.
The new weeknight newscast will compete against long-established and hour-long WAVY News 10 at 10:00 on FOX 43 on WVBT 43, which is produced by their sister station WAVY 10 (NBC) and this will be WTKR 3’s second attempt at a weeknight 10:00 p.m. newscast for WGNT 27.
In 1995 (my birth year), WTKR 3 also produced a half-hour 10:00 p.m. newscast in which was called NewsChannel 3 at 10:00 on UPN 27. Unfortunately, the program was canceled in 1997, due to low ratings and the 10:00 p.m. timeslot has been home to syndicated programming, ever since. WVBT 43 has been having a 10:00 p.m. newscast since 1998 and has been the most successful attempt at a primetime newscast in the Hampton Roads.
WTKR 3 is bringing back weeknight primetime news on WGNT 27. We’ll find out how this attempt goes, this time.
