WISH-TV is expanding and starting their “Daybreak,” earlier to 4:00 a.m.

WISH-TV 8 / Indianapolis (“WISH-TV”)

FIRST ON THE BLOG: The last time we talked about WISH in Indianapolis, they had their huge news expansion as they originally supposed to switch affiliations from CBS to Independent, but then later switched from CBS to The CW.

WISH 8, announced earlier today by President and GM Les Vann, announced that the station is expanding their weekday morning newscast, 24-Hour News 8’s Daybreak, to 4:00 a.m., starting Monday, July 13th, 2015. The new 5-hour program will remain anchored by Scott Sander, Lauren Lowrey and Kylie Conway with the StormTrack 8 Forecast from Meteorologist and long-time WISH-TV veteran Randy Ollis (which, btw, is now a grandparent as his first grandson, Donovan, was born to the world today.) and Traffic with Ken Brewer.

The new half-hour at 4:00 a.m. will become the third station locally to expand to that timeslot and will compete against WTHR 13 (NBC)’s Channel 13 Eyewitness News Sunrise and WXIN 59 (FOX)’s FOX 59 Morning News at 4:00 a.m.. The program will replace TouchVision News, which has been in the 4:00 a.m. timeslot, since the switching of affiliations on WISH 8. WRTV 6 (ABC) will continue to start at 4:30 a.m. with RTV 6 News – Good Morning Indiana while WTTV 4 (CBS)’s CBS 4 Morning News will continue to start at 5:00 a.m.

WISH 8’s President and General Manager, Les Vann:

“Mornings are the fastest growing news day part, and one of the most important times of a day for viewers. This additional expansion allows us to further enhance our commitment to local news, better preparing viewers for their day ahead.”

This also comes as WISH 8 has seen some ratings success during the May 2015 ratings period, especially with their morning newscast.

According to WISHTV.com, the station was #1 at 5:00 a.m. in both A18-49 and A25-54, growing in both ratings and share, over February 2015 and May 2014. The 5:30 a.m. half-hour was also rated #1 in A18-49 and grew over February. And since the affiliation switch/news expansion in January 2015, WISH 8 continues to beat network broadcasts head-to-head. In May 2015, the 7:00-9:00 a.m. block beats CBS This Morning on WTTV 4 in all key adult and women demos, growing audience share over February 2015. With W25-54, the 7:00-8:00 a.m. hour, ties ABC’s Good Morning America (WRTV 6) and doubles the ratings of CBS This Morning (WTTV 4).

And the morning newscast has seen awards as well. According to WISHTV.com, on Friday, June 12th, 2015, the morning newscast was awarded Media General’s D. Tennant Bryan journalism award for Outstanding Morning Newscast.

So, the affiliation switch has turned out to be good after all. And it seems like it, since WISH 8 is expanding their Daybreak to start earlier. Plus, they are getting good ratings and awards. So good for WISH 8. It has worked out well after all.

  1. Sometime ago even morning news at 4:00 am was an odd timeslot. I expect within maybe the next 5 to 10 years TV stations may start expanding their morning newscasts to 4:00 am it may be just as common as 4:30 am news is now. There are already a few TV Markets in the Grand United States of America that have TV stations that have their morning newscasts that have 4:00 am morning newscasts such as Indy, Nashville Nashville which is weird because WKRN, WSMV, and WTVF all start their news at 4:00am, LA with KTLA Morning news starting at 4:00 am, Chicago with WGN starting at 4:00 am, San Francisco/San Jose, Las Vegas with KLAS having 4:00 am news which I watched a few years ago at that time when I was in Begas because I had to get up at 4:00 am to catch an early flight. Houston, Boston, Syracuse for some weird reason which is a smaller TV Market, and Philly. I don’t know if you can have morning news any earlier then 4:00 am. It would be something if morning news ever started at 3:30 am which I don’t see happening but at one time I though 5:00 am was a very early start time and that you couldn’t go any earlier then 5:00 am and it did.

  2. According to Zap 2 it and Titan TV Listings it does not show that WISH-TV got a 4:00am newscast yet. I don’t know if they got the message yet.

  3. A local newscast is really a hybrid of local and national news if you have national and international headlines on them. For example like if you are watching a local newscast on a network station like ABC, NBC and CBS and you have a national news feed with a network reporter reporting on a national and international news story and its from the network its really a network reporting delivering the story on the local newscast which makes it a hybrid of local news and network news on the local newscast.
