WKRG has debuted its own weekend morning newscast.

WKRG-TV 5 / Mobile, AL – Pensacola, FL (“WKRG News 5”)

FIRST ON THE BLOG (other than TV and Radio in Southwest Alabama – the link to the website is under the “links” page): A new newscast has debuted earlier today in Mobile and Pensacola. This time, it involves WKRG. It looks like Media General is stepping up its stations in a good/big way.

WKRG 5 has debuted its weekend morning newscast earlier today. The new newscast, still titled WKRG News 5 This Morning, went on the air earlier today and will be shown on Saturdays from 5:00-6:00 a.m., before CBS This Morning and Sundays from 6:00-8:00 a.m. before CBS News Sunday Morning. WKRG 5 will be the ONLY ones on during the Saturday 5:00 a.m. hour and the Sunday 7:00 a.m. hour while the Sunday 6:00 a.m. hour will compete against WEAR 3’s long-established weekend morning newscast, 3 in the Morning Weekend.

The newscast is anchored by Chad Petri and First Alert StormTeam Weather with Meteorologist and WKRG’s newest meteorologist Melissa Constanzer, who joins the station and the program next week. This week, they had Meteorologist Jonathan Owens deliver the weather on the weekend morning newscasts.

But this is a step in WKRG’s promise to expand news programming, as they already did with the 9:00 a.m. weekday morning newscast, which debuted earlier this year and now, this with the new weekend morning newscast on WKRG 5.

I say, good for them and good for this area. They really do need it.

UPDATE: This post has just been recognized by WKRG 5’s morning anchor Avery Cotton and by WKRG 5 themselves on Twitter. Apparently, they saw my post on Twitter and decided to retweet it. Plus, they now follow my blog on twitter! Thank you guys! I really do appreciate it.

  1. Probably don’t expect WKRG-TV to get a 4:30am morning newscast since WPMI canned their 4:30a. When WPMI cut its 4:30am newscast I think it dashed hope for WKRG to get a 4:30am newscast. Maybe in a few years if things improve in the Mobile Market It may be a question for WKRG to get 4:30am news but right now doesn’t look too good. The only thing to do is when there is a set back is to look forward.

  2. I look on Zap 2 It and Titan TV Listings and both listings does not show or list a Saturday or Sunday Morning newscast on WKRG-TV you may have made a mistake posting it Florida Man.

    • I didn’t make a mistake. Both WKRG and WKRG’s very own Avery Cotton, retweeted my post on it and they both now follow me. That lets you know, its official and that WKRG now has weekend morning news. I made no mistake here.

    • The author did not make a mistake posting this article (there had been other messages about the news programming elsewhere, including the weblog “Television and Radio in Southwest Alabama”).

  3. TitanTV actually did “get the word”, since their guide to WKRG-TV’s programming plans for this past Sunday had a listing for local morning news programming between 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. They just need to have their guides to WKRG-TV’s programming plans for next Saturday and Sunday and the ones after them amended.
