WPSG will not be having a morning newscast for the first time since 2002.

WPSG 57 / Philadelphia (“The CW Philly 57”)

FIRST ON THE BLOG: We first reported that KYW-TV will be returning to a noon newscast, starting this Monday. Well, apparently, with every additional newscast, there can sometimes be a cutback. But this one will be a shocker because for the first time since 2002, WPSG will NOT have a weekday morning newscast.

Yesterday (6/26/2015) was the last day for CBS 3 Eyewitness News This Morning on The CW Philly 57. The 2-hour weekday morning newscast from 7:00-9:00 a.m. was anchored by Ukee Washington and Erika Von Tiehl (who used to work in my home market for WFOR 4) with CBS 3 Eyewitness Weather from Meteorologist Katie Fehlinger (who also used to work for AccuWeather).

It will be the first time since 2002 that WPSG 57 will NOT have a local weekday morning newscast. In 2002, the station started airing KYW Newsradio 1060 This Morning, a hybrid program between their sister station KYW 3 and all-news radio station KYW Newsradio 1060. The program was then canceled in 2005 for WakeUPNews, which was on from 5:00-9:00 a.m. and at that time, the name was referenced to the then-UPN network, but then changed the name slightly in 2006 to de-empathize the UPN name as the station became an O&O station of The CW and became Wake Up News. The program would be produced by Traffic Pulse from May 2005 until June 2009 when the program was canceled in favor of KYW 3 producing a 2-hour morning extension of CBS 3 Eyewitness News This Morning and now after 6 years, the program will be canceled.

What will be replaced in its 7:00/8:00 a.m. timeslots? Paid Programming at 7:00 a.m. and The Better Show at 8:00 a.m. I will guess that the program was canceled due to low ratings and poor viewership against WTXF 29 (FOX)’s FOX 29 News – Good Day Philadelphia and WFMZ 69 (Ind. Allentown)’s 69 News at Sunrise.

Don’t be surprised about this move. I knew it would happen eventually and it has finally done so.

  1. Why do TV stations add news and cut news at the same time I does not make sense? Add one take one. I really wish TV stations would stop playing these games with adding news when at the same time cutting somewhere else. Its like 1 step forward and two steps back. These people need to learn a lesson they will never forget.

  2. And of course the TV markets that have CBS O&O stations in always do this with their duopoly stations. KTXA in DFW CBS O&O station. WLNY-TV in NYC cut their morning show CBS O&O station. KCAL with their elimination of its 2:00pm and 3:00pm and cutback of its 4:00pm newscast from one full hour to 30 minutes also CBS O&O station and now WPSG in Philly also CBS O&O

  3. I think CBS is cutting its news programming on both its network and O&O stations. On TV SPY Website CBS is cancelling CBS News Up To The Minute late night early morning national news programming

  4. It’s probably low ratings and they want to invest in the noon show, putting resources in it will make them far more competitive then they ever were from 7-9. Wonder if they will keep the 10pm long term, it’s a very distant third.

  5. This doesn’t really surprise me due to the fact they just got rid of staff from prime-time. Hopefully it was the best move for them.

  6. How about going back to airing cartoons? Apparently there’s too much news in the morning that the market cannot sustain another news program.
