KOLO adds more local weekend “News NOW” at 5:00 p.m.

KOLO-TV 8 / Reno (“KOLO 8 News NOW”)

FIRST ON THE BLOG (other than KOLO.com): If you thought that KOLO was done adding local news. You are wrong. On this July 4th weekend, KOLO adds, yet, another one.

Starting yesterday (as of this post – The 4th of July), KOLO 8 has added a half-hour 5:00 p.m. newscast on weekends. KOLO 8 News NOW at 5:00‘s weekend edition is anchored, according to KOLO 8, by Kendra Kostelecky with KOLO 8 Weather NOW from AMS/Sealed Meteorologist Dick Stoddard and KOLO 8 Sports NOW with Ben Ross. KOLO 8’s weekend newscasts at 6:30 and 11:00 p.m., as well as ABC World News TONIGHT at 6:00 p.m., will remain right where they are.

With this debut, KOLO 8 becomes the third station in the market to air a local weekend half-hour newscast at 5:00 p.m., after KTVN 2 (CBS) and KRNV 4 (NBC). However, this also leaves KRNV 4 as the only local station with two weekend newscasts, while both KTVN 2 and KOLO 8 now have three each.

And interestingly enough, KTVN 2 and KOLO 8 both compete at the same times on weekends – 5:00, 6:30 and 11:00 p.m. This is the third recent expansion by KOLO 8 in less than a year, after we FIRST reported that KOLO 8 was adding a 4:30 a.m. half-hour to its weekday morning newscast, Good Morning Reno, as well as the FIRST to report that KOLO 8 was adding a 4:30 p.m. weekday newscast, that is still the ONLY local newscast on in the area and created the area’s first 90-minute news block from 4:30-6:00 p.m.

A very good time for local news over at the Gray Television station, indeed. And KOLO 8 is really doing its job. Enjoy, Reno!

  1. They should have added Saturday and Sunday Morning newscasts instead since the Reno TV Market does not have weekend morning news. Adding a newscast at the wrong time. It p’s me off when a TV station is lacking a newscast at a certain time and instead of the TV station adding it the the crucial time they add news in an unnecessary time slot.
