No… you’re eyes are not deceiving you. You heard it right. WAGA is ready to do its 11:00 p.m. newscast until 12:00 midnight.
Starting Monday September 14th, 2015, WAGA 5 will expand FOX 5 NewsEdge at 11:00 to Midnight, making it an hour-long newscast. The newscast is scheduled to be the ONLY hour-long 11:00 p.m. newscast in Atlanta and one of only a few stations to deliver an hour-long late newscast at either 11:00 p.m. ET or 10:00 p.m. CT in the Top 50 markets (San Antonio’s KSAT 12 – ABC, is one of those few examples).
Tom Hayes (formerly from my home market at WSVN 7 – FOX) currently anchors the 30-minute show that will soon become a full-hour. We’re not currently sure as to if WAGA 5 will add a Saturday edition of the news at 11:00 p.m. and make that an hour-long, as well as expanding the Sunday edition to an hour, but we’ll just wait and see.
WAGA 5 currently airs a repeat of Access Hollywood at 11:30 p.m. and that will be filled by the new extra half-hour of local news. Tom will continue to anchor the newscast, alongside FOX 5 StormTeam AMS-CBM/Sealed Chief Meteorologist David Chandley (who moved to WAGA 5 from WSB 2) and Sports Director Ken Rodriguez.
According to a press release, obtained by AJC’s Radio and TV Talk Blog, the VP and GM of WAGA 5, Mike McClain, says that the newscast will add segments on what’s trending and opinions/editorials, as well as additional weather and sports segments, since the newscast will now finish at Midnight, starting September 14th.
This is very interesting for those who want hour-long news at a later time. A good move by one of the top FOX stations in the country.
