KOSA will discontinue its 4:00 and 9:00 p.m. news on August 28th.

KOSA-TV 7 / Odessa – Midland, TX (“CBS 7”)

FIRST ON THE BLOG: KOSA will make its first moves under its new ownership with Gray Television. Unfortunately, those moves will be a discontinuation of some newscasts.

On Friday August 28th, 2015, KOSA 7 will air its weekday half-hour 4:00 p.m. newscast (CBS 7 News – Front Page at 4:00) and its weeknight half-hour 9:00 p.m. newscast for KOSA-DT 7.2, the My Network TV affiliate (My 16 – My News 16 at 9:00) for the very last time. Afterwards, the 4:00 p.m. timeslot will be replaced with an episode of Family Feud with Steve Harvey while the 9:00 p.m. timeslot on KOSA-DT 7.2 will be replaced by an episode of the sitcom Mike and Molly, starring Melissa McCarthy and Billy Gardell.

Also after this, KWES 9/KWAB 4 (NBC) will be home to the ONLY weekday 4:00 p.m. newscast in West Texas (Midland – Odessa), however KOSA 7 will continue to start its early-evening news coverage at 4:30 p.m. with CBS 7 News – Closer Look, which will still be home to the area’s ONLY weekday newscast at 4:30 p.m. And also after this, there will be NO primetime newscast at 9:00 p.m. in the area, since KMID 2 (ABC) doesn’t do one for sister station, KPEJ 24 (FOX) while KWES 9/KWAB 4 doesn’t do one either for its digital subchannel KWES 9.2/KWAB 4.2 (The CW).

So, this is not good news for a station that is supposed to keep Your Eye on West Texas.

  1. Pretty much with corporate run media then can advertise slogans such as “Your Eye On West Texas” or in my city of Albuquerque KOB-TV 4 slogan is KOB 4 Stands For New Mexico and pretty much may not care about the viewers. KOB-TV has been putting a lot of NBC National news feeds on their local newscast since COMCAST merged with NBC and NBC affiliates in TV Markets were Comcast is the main cable provider have to follow the same guidelines and rules as if KOB was and NBC O&O station. Comcast is the main cable provider for Albuquerque. With corporate media they can pretty much false advertise about their news or station and Gray Television with owns KOSA is a large media company so large media companies will do anything to please their shareholders at the expense of local viewers from things such as cutting newscasts or running more national and international stories on local newscasts. The bright side is that maybe KWES will expand its 4:00pm newscast or KPEJ could get 9:00pm news since their other station KMID expanded its morning news or KWWT could get 9:00pm newscast I think KWWT is owned by KWES which KWES could expand to 9:00pm on CW. I think KWES is a strong station in the Midland market.

  2. I word of wisdom is when there is a setback there is nothing to do but look forward and in this case the Midland TV market just got dealt a setback.

  3. The good news is that MY 16 still has the news in the morning from 6:00am to 9:00am I wonder if the morning news on MY 16 will but cut also?

  4. Raycom has been doing a good job with expanding news lately. You reported a few Raycom owned stations will be getting news this week.

  5. Eventually KMID will produce a 9pm newcast for KPEJ but not until they move into KPEJ’s building. Once they do the’ll go HD, get the 9pm and a new set. It’s within the next year.

My friend is a former Met there with friends still at KMID. It’s 100 percent accurate.

I have no idea about the 4pm newscast cancelation but the 9pm had low ratings so that’s why it’s getting canceled.

  6. We know what king of newscast KMID airs; Morning, 5 & 10PM. And it makes me so upset that BIG 2 wouldn’t expand their news and reinstate the 6PM newscast that they canceled long time ago. In my opinion; Nexstar needs to do something about KMID and fix it, otherwise I would sell the station.

  7. It would be that they move into the small FOX building and have both stations in that small building. Nexstar owns both buildings but has already put KMID’s building up for sale.

My friend is the former weekend met there. Trust me on this.

    • Does your friend know if KMID will ever expand to a noon newscast or reinstate their 6:00pm newscast and have both a 5 and 6pm newscast?

      • I’m the friend and former KMID weekend MET whom “therealnewsie” refers to. Last I knew they are still planning on having a 9pm newscast on KPEJ, and that should launch when KMID moves into the remodeled KPEJ building, which should happen sometime soon. Before I left there was talk about bringing back a 6pm news on KMID but the issue is Nexstar doesn’t want to move jeopardy out of that time slot. No idea if a noon newscast will ever happen.

      • Yes, I worked on air at KMID as a forecaster/reporter for almost a year in 2014-early 2015. Before I left the station in February of this year I was told the new studio at the KPEJ Fox station would be ready to go by June, but obviously that didn’t happen. My friend who still works at the station says they’re aiming to get in there and launch the new 9pm show for November sweeps. KMID is also planning to expand weekend newscasts to include Saturdays (finally!) when they move into the new studio.

      • Oh wow! That’s great news! I saw you’re twitter and it shows that you’re now working for WOAY-TV 50 (ABC) in Bluefield – Beckley – Oak Hill, WV.

If you’re friend tells you about the expansions or what not, then let me know by submitting in tips to me.

        This is great to hear!

  8. KOSA-TV number 7 logo is an ugly logo. I have never like the logo. Joke: maybe KOSA is cutting news because less people are watching their newscasts. Maybe less people are watching their newscast because maybe they can’t stand to see KOSA-TV graphics.

  9. […] Starting tonight, KMID 2 will add and air a weeknight-ONLY half-hour primetime newscast at 9:00pm on its sister station, KPEJ 24 (through an SSA with Marshall Broadcasting). FOX 24 News – First at 9:00 starts tonight and the Permian Basin will see a return of a primetime newscast to the market, the first one since KOSA 7 (CBS) canceled its primetime newscast on its second digital subchannel, KOSA 7.2 (MyTV &#8211… […]
