WLEX will be adding a 4:30 p.m. local newscast, starting September 8th.

WLEX-TV 18 / Lexington (“LEX 18”)

FIRST ON THE BLOG: WLEX has always been in a tight ratings battle in Lexington with WKYT. And now, WLEX will add another newscast to stay in the ratings game with WKYT.

Starting Tuesday September 8th, 2015 (the day after Labor Day), WLEX 18 will be adding a half-hour weekday newscast at 4:30 p.m. The newscast, obviously titled LEX 18 News at 4:30, will compete against WKYT 27 (CBS/CW)’s already-established WKYT News at 4:30 for local news in that timeslot. Plus, it will fill the gap that WLEX 18 had as the station broadcasts Inside Edition, but will soon move to 7:30 p.m., once the new broadcast debuts and once it does, it will finally create a 2 and 1/2-hour block of local news for WLEX 18, something that WKYT 27 already had for a few years now.

The new broadcast will be anchored by newcomer Angie Beavin, who joins WLEX 18 from KXAN 36 (NBC) in Austin, but this is a homecoming for Angie as she previously worked in the market at WKYT 27 and at WMYT 57 (CBS) in Hazard, KY, plus she went to college in Kentucky at UK, where she majored in Journalism, so this is homecoming for Angie. LEX 18 StormTracker Weather with Chief Meteorologist Bill Meck, could be a part of the new broadcast, but we’re not sure.

The only other station in the market with a local newscast at 4:00 p.m. is WYMT 57’s 57 Mountain News – First at 4:00 (half-hour), while WTVQ 36 (ABC/MyTV) will continue to start at 5:00 p.m.

So more local news and more local staff, coming to WLEX 18. Get ready, WKYT 27.

  1. I don’t understand how a smaller TV market like Lexington KY, has more TV stations with hour long 4:00pm newscasts then A TV market like mine in Albuquerque which is a larger TV Market then Lexington is where there is only one TV station with 4:00pm news KRQE or like in your city of Miami which is a way bigger TV Market where there are just as many TV stations with 4:00pm news as the Lexington TV Market has. WSVN and WPLG with have 4:00pm newscasts in Miami.

  2. […] This is the station’s second newscast expansion this year, as the station has already added a half-hour 10:00 p.m. newscast on WTVQ-DT 36.2 (My Kentucky TV) earlier this Summer. For the first time in what seems like years, WTVQ 36 will have a 90-minute news block from 5:00-6:30 p.m., something that WLEX 18 and WKYT 27 already had for years and soon, both will have 2 and 1/2-hour news blocks from 4:00-6:30 p.m., once WLEX 18 adds a 4:30 p.m. newscast on Tuesday, September 8th, 2015.
