FIRST ON THE BLOG: WLEX has always been in a tight ratings battle in Lexington with WKYT. And now, WLEX will add another newscast to stay in the ratings game with WKYT.
Starting Tuesday September 8th, 2015 (the day after Labor Day), WLEX 18 will be adding a half-hour weekday newscast at 4:30 p.m. The newscast, obviously titled LEX 18 News at 4:30, will compete against WKYT 27 (CBS/CW)’s already-established WKYT News at 4:30 for local news in that timeslot. Plus, it will fill the gap that WLEX 18 had as the station broadcasts Inside Edition, but will soon move to 7:30 p.m., once the new broadcast debuts and once it does, it will finally create a 2 and 1/2-hour block of local news for WLEX 18, something that WKYT 27 already had for a few years now.
The new broadcast will be anchored by newcomer Angie Beavin, who joins WLEX 18 from KXAN 36 (NBC) in Austin, but this is a homecoming for Angie as she previously worked in the market at WKYT 27 and at WMYT 57 (CBS) in Hazard, KY, plus she went to college in Kentucky at UK, where she majored in Journalism, so this is homecoming for Angie. LEX 18 StormTracker Weather with Chief Meteorologist Bill Meck, could be a part of the new broadcast, but we’re not sure.
The only other station in the market with a local newscast at 4:00 p.m. is WYMT 57’s 57 Mountain News – First at 4:00 (half-hour), while WTVQ 36 (ABC/MyTV) will continue to start at 5:00 p.m.
So more local news and more local staff, coming to WLEX 18. Get ready, WKYT 27.
