FIRST ON THE BLOG: WTVQ is gonna be adding a local newscast in a timeslot that other ABC affiliates have already had for years now.
WTVQ 36 will be adding a 5:30 p.m. newscast, starting Monday September 14th, 2015. The new newscast, ABC 36 News at 5:30, will compete against WLEX 18 (NBC)’s LEX 18 News at 5:30 and long-time leader WKYT 27 (CBS)’s WKYT News at 5:30. The only other news operation in the area, WYMT 57 (CBS) in Hazard, KY, simulcasts sister station WKYT 27’s 5:30 p.m. newscast.
This is the station’s second newscast expansion this year, as the station has already added a half-hour 10:00 p.m. newscast on WTVQ-DT 36.2 (My Kentucky TV) earlier this Summer. For the first time in what seems like years, WTVQ 36 will have a 90-minute news block from 5:00-6:30 p.m., something that WLEX 18 and WKYT 27 already had for years and soon, both will have 2 and 1/2-hour news blocks from 4:00-6:30 p.m., once WLEX 18 adds a 4:30 p.m. newscast on Tuesday, September 8th, 2015.
Something good for a #3-ranked station in the area and with the 10:00 p.m. news added earlier this year, WTVQ 36 could soon be a force to be reckoned with (that’s if WKYT 27 does something awful in which they won’t and will retain their #1 news status).

For a very long time in my city of Albuquerque up until about 10 years to 15 years ago KRQE-TV 13 was rated last place station and now they are a top gun station with at times a battle between KOAT or KRQE being number one in news. Now KRQE tries to outdo every news station in ABQ when it comes to the news they cover in the Albuquerque area.

They don’t act like it with not having more then 8 hours straight, 10 hours straight from 7:00a to 5:00pm with no noon newscast, no 4:00pm newscast or 6:30pm. KOAT always saying they are number one in New Mexico is like politicians here in the Grand United States of America saying we have the world’s best healthcare system and and the same time not provide universal healthcare. I very rarely watch KOAT because on their ads about news they always brag that they are number one news and think they are better then everybody else when in my opinion they have the least amount of news and never try to expand news they have not had noon news since 2007 that is when they cancelled their noon news they never wan’t to invest into expanding news at 4, or 6:30. I don’t think KOAT wants to even try when it comes to expanding newscasts.
