WUAB is shifting WOIO’s 10:00 p.m. newscast to 9:00 p.m. in 4Q 2015.

WUAB 43 / Lorain – Cleveland (“CLE 43”)
WOIO 19 / Shaker Heights – Cleveland (“Cleveland 19”)

FIRST ON THE BLOG: Very soon in 4Q 2015, very HUGE changes are coming to Cleveland TV news, especially in one duopoly, where they will change their schedules to include… a 9:00 p.m. newscast. That’s right. For the first time ever, Cleveland will have a 9:00 p.m. newscast.

At some point in 4Q 2015 (which means either in October, November or December), WOIO 19 will move sister station WUAB 43’s 10:00 p.m. nightly newscast and Sports Extra to 9:00 p.m. Here’s the breakdown: On weeknights, WUAB 43 will offer a 45-minute newscast at 9:00 p.m., followed by Sports Extra at 9:45 p.m. The same will be done on weekends, however, also on weeknights, the station will offer a half-hour newscast at 10:00 p.m. (basically cut-down from an hour to 30 minutes) So basically, this is how it will be:

  • Weeknights:
    • 9:00-9:45 PM: Cleveland 19 News at 9:00 on CLE 43
    • 9:45-10:00 PM: Cleveland 19 Sports Extra on CLE 43
    • 10:00-10:30 PM: Cleveland 19 News at 10:00 on CLE 43
  • Weekends:
    • 9:00-9:45 PM: Cleveland 19 News at 9:00 on CLE 43
    • 9:45-10:00 PM: Cleveland 19 Sports Extra on CLE 43

What this mean is that My Network TV primetime programming on WUAB 43 will be tape-delayed and will be seen on weeknights from 11:00 p.m.-1:00 a.m. But again, I don’t know as to when it begins, since the only details I have is that it will start in the 4Q of 2015.

Even though there is no official press release about this, I expect that David Wittman, Tiffany Tucker and First Alert Weather with Chief Meteorologist Jeff Tanchak with the sports crew on Sports Extra.

So after 25+ years of broadcasting 10:00 p.m. news, WUAB 43 is giving up because of WJW 8 (FOX)’s dominance in the Cleveland market, especially in the 10:00 p.m. timeslot and now wants to make a name for itself by providing a 9:00 p.m. prime-time newscast, 7 days a week.

Once again I will say, with this move, the 10:00 p.m. news gets cut down to a half-hour and weeknights only while the current hour-long 10:00 p.m. newscast is moved to 9:00 p.m. and still, 7 nights a week. I don’t know the official date yet as to when this will happen, but as soon as I do know, I will let you know.

So, to recap, Cleveland will have its first-ever 9:00 p.m. newscast. Congrats to WUAB 43 and to sister station WOIO 19. Finally gonna give WUAB 43, some recognition in the city after all.
