There will be an option for 5:30 p.m. local news in Youngstown after all, thanks to WKBN.

WKBN-TV 27 / Youngstown, OH (“WKBN 27”)

FIRST ON THE BLOG: Once WYTV discontinues their 5:30 p.m. newscast, its sister station through SSA and JSA, WKBN will take over.

On Monday September 14th, 2015, WKBN 27 First News at 5:30 will premiere. The newscast will be the ONLY option for local news at 5:30 p.m. in the area, once it makes its debut because WYTV 33 (ABC/MyTV) would have discontinued its 5:30 p.m. newscast, the previous Friday and WFMJ 21 (NBC/CW) currently has no plans to expand their newscasts before 6:00 p.m. The newscast is expected to be anchored by Dave Sess and Erika Thomas with StormTeam 27 Weather from Chief Meteorologist Paul Wetzel.

This will actually mark a return to a local newscast at 5:30 p.m. on WKBN 27, as it has once aired a local newscast during that time in the late 90s before. It was discontinued in the Mid-2000s as the 5:30 p.m. newscast was transferred to WYTV 33, because of the SSA/JSA agreements with WKBN 27. But because both stations are starting to separate content from each other, WKBN 27 is bringing back the 5:30 p.m. newscast and taking it away from WYTV 33. And this will also make WKBN 27, the ONLY local station in the area with weeknight local news at 5:00 and 5:30 p.m.

Don’t worry Youngstown. You are not losing your 5:30 p.m. weeknight local news after all. WKBN 27 will keep it in check for you.
