WBUP is adding a 6:00 p.m. newscast, creating the area’s first and only hour-long news block.

WBUP 10 / Ishpeming – Marquette, MI (“ABC 10”)

FIRST ON THE BLOG: I don’t report much on local TV news from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, but I will now because a local TV station will be doing something that nobody else does yet.

Starting Monday September 14th, 2015, WBUP 10 will be adding a weeknight half-hour local newscast at 6:00 p.m. ABC 10 News NOW at 6:00 will be the third local station in the market with local news at that time, including long-time leader WLUC 6 (NBC) and upstart rival WJMN 3 (CBS). Its 4 if you count digital translator W40AN 11 (FOX), which rebroadcasts WLUK 11 (FOX) out of Green Bay and airs FOX 11 News at 5:00 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. ET.

WBUP 10’s News Director, Jerry Taylor:

“We’re really excited about the addition of our 6:00 p.m. newscast. Adding another half-hour of news will allow our viewers another opportunity to get the latest local news, weather and sports happenings here in the Upper Peninsula.”

WBUP 10’s Operations Manager, Kenn Baynard:

“We will be the only television station in the Upper Peninsula to have a straight hour of news in the evening.”

And Kenn is right. WBUP 10 will create the area’s first hour-long early evening newscast from 5:30-6:30 p.m., as both WJMN 3 and WLUC 6 both start at 6:00 p.m. while WLUK 11’s translator, W40AN 11, also start at 6:00 p.m. ET.

With this addition, WBUP 10 will now air newscasts on weekdays only from 6:30-7:00 a.m., 5:30-6:00, 6:00-6:30, 10:00-10:30 on sister station WBKP 5 (CW) and 11:00-11:35 p.m.

So yes. More local news coming to DMA #180. Enjoy, Upper Michigan.
