Here it is, everybody! The biggest week of debuting newscasts, all year! Here is that list by day, time order (in EST) and if at the same time, by market size and/or time format (ex. half-hour or full-hour)
Monday September 14th, 2015
- 4:00-4:30 AM: News 4 This Morning at 4:00 a.m.
KMOV in St. Louis. The last station in the St. Louis area to expand to 4:00 a.m., as others have done so for years.
- 11:00 AM-12:00 PM: WPTV NewsChannel 5 Midday
WPTV in West Palm Beach. The newscast is anchored by John Favole and Roxanne Stein, who were kicked out of their popular Today on 5 morning show after 20 years.
- 11:00-11:30 AM: FOX 29 News Midday
KABB in San Antonio. After announcing it earlier in the Summer, they will finally debut it as it gets closer to fall. KABB was the first station to announce an addition for September 14th and this is for San Antonio’s ONLY midday newscast at 11:00 a.m.
- 9:00-10:00 AM: KTVU Mornings on 2 at 9:00 a.m.
KTVU in San Francisco. The popular morning show now goes on from 4:00-10:00 a.m., entirely competing against KRON 4 (MyTV)’s weekday morning newscast.
- 9:00-10:00 AM: KVAL News at 9:00 a.m.
KVAL in Eugene. The ONLY mid-morning newscast in the area, focused on Eugene and Western Oregon.
- 11:00 AM-12:00 PM: 7 News Midday
KMGH in Denver. The station goes to back to a full-hour of midday news, now that Right This Minute has moved to a full hour at 2:00 p.m.
- 12:00-1:00 PM: News 4 Tucson at Noon
KVOA in Tucson. The station becomes the ONLY station in Southern Arizona and in Arizona entirely, to have an hour-long 12:00 Noon newscast.
- 4:00-4:30 PM: WECT News – First at 4:00
WECT in Wilmington. The area’s ONLY local newscast at 4:00 will be followed by Inside Edition at 4:30, then its WECT 6’s 90-minute regular local news block from 5:00-6:30 and NBC Nightly News at 6:30 p.m.
- 5:00-6:00 PM: ABC 15 News at 5:00
WPDE in Myrtle Beach. The first time in almost 20 years that WPDE 15 will offer a local newscast at 5:00 p.m., competing against WMBF 32 (NBC) and the first half-hour at WBTW 13 (CBS).
- 4:00-5:00 PM: KHOU 11 News at 4:00
KHOU in Houston. The station expands the 4:00 p.m. newscast to an hour after dropping Jeopardy! which was a part of the station’s schedule since the program debuted in the mid-80s.
- 4:00-5:00 PM: Channel 5 News at 4:00
KRGV in Brownsville, TX. They won’t admit it to us, but we already know their secret, which is that KRGV is expanding their 4:00 p.m. newscast to a full hour.
- 4:00-4:30 PM: News 4 at 4:00
KMOV in St. Louis. This is the station’s second addition of the day and again, the last in the market with a 4:00 p.m. newscast, after KSDK 5 (NBC – half-hour) and KTVI 2 (FOX)/KPLR 11 (CW) (hour-long and on KPLR 11)
- 4:00-4:30 PM: Local 4 News at 4:00
WHBF in Moline. Never has WHBF 4 broadcast this much amount of news in ever. The area’s second 4:00 p.m. newscast, after long-time leader KWQC 6 (NBC), launches tomorrow and is also, a half-hour, putting it in direct competition with KWQC 6.
- 5:30-6:00 PM: ABC 36 News at 5:30
WTVQ in Lexington. Its been a long time since WTVQ 36 had a 5:30 newscast, but will finally join in the 5:30 p.m. timeslot battle against the more-dominant stations, WLEX 18 (NBC) and WKYT 27 (CBS) and even Hazard, KY’s WYMT 57 (CBS).
- 5:30-6:00 PM: WKBN 27 First News at 5:30
WKBN in Youngstown. The station is swapping programming with WYTV 33 and will now air the area’s ONLY hour-long newscast at 5:00 p.m., as WFMJ 21 (NBC/CW) doesn’t start until 6:00 p.m.
- 6:00-6:30 PM: ABC 10 News NOW at 6:00
WBUP in Marquette. The station is creating the area’s first-ever hour-long early evening news block with an additional local newscast at 6:00 p.m., combined with an already established local newscast at 5:30 p.m. that was already the ONLY ones on in the area.
- 7:00-7:30 PM: ABC 7 News at 7:00
WWSB in Sarasota. The newscast with Alan Cohn, is expected to compete against WFLA 8 (NBC)’s 7:00 p.m. newscast, but will be the ONLY Sarasota-based newscast on at that time in the market, providing an advantage to those who live more closely around the Sarasota areas.
- 7:00-7:30 PM: 9 On Your Side at 7:00
WCPO in Cincinnati. The ONLY 7:00 p.m. newscast in the Cincinnati Tri-State from a station that took out Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! for more Scripps-based syndicated programming, but has since took out Let’s Ask America in that timeslot and will now air a local newscast in its place.
- 7:00-7:30 PM: News 10 at 7:00 on MyFOX 10
WTHI-DT2 in Terre Haute. For the first time in the area’s history, a 7:00 p.m. weeknight newscast comes to the Wabash Valley. The station that’s Leading The Way is doing it with more local news for the area.
- 6:00-6:30 PM: WDAY News at 6:00
KBMY/KMCY in Bismarck/Minot. WDAY 6 in Fargo is expanding its 6:00 p.m. newscast to viewers in Western and Central North Dakota. WDAZ 8 in Grand Forks is expected to continue to produce their own 6:00 p.m. newscast, in which it will only be seen on WDAZ 8, itself.
- 6:30-7:00 PM: KARE 11 News at 6:30
KARE in Minneapolis. The second hour-long 6:00 p.m. weeknight newscast in the area, after KSTP 5 (ABC). Julie Nelson and Randy Shaver are expected to anchor the new half-hour newscast.
- 6:30-7:00 PM: ABC 6 News at 6:30
KAAL in Austin, MN. Betsy Singer will anchor the new half-hour newscast at 6:30 p.m. from a different studio than the one used for their regular newscasts. By the way, I thank Betsy for contacting me about my errors on my original post. She’s so amazing and nice and wonderful!
- 9:00-9:30 PM: KETV NewsWatch 7 at 9:00 on Me-TV Omaha
KETV-DT2 in Omaha. The ONLY fully-produced 9:00 p.m. newscast in Omaha, as parts of KPTM 42 (FOX)’s hour-long 9:00 p.m. newscast, seen weeknights and Sundays, are produced out of Fresno.
- 10:00-10:30 PM: CW 39 NewsFix at 10:00
KIAH in Houston. Apparently the NewsFix format is so successful enough that they are adding a weeknight 10:00 p.m. newscast to the mix.
- 11:30 PM-12:00 AM: FOX 5 NewsEdge at 11:30
WAGA in Atlanta. The East Coast’s first 11:30 p.m. newscast is coming to Atlanta and will continue to be anchored by Tom Hayes. Nobody in Atlanta will have this kind of newscast on this late.
