WKRC is expanding their “Good Morning Cincinnati” to another hour on WSTR.

WKRC-TV 12 / Cincinnati (“Local 12”)

FIRST ON THE BLOG: It looks like the weekday morning news race in the Cincy Tri-State is about to heat up! WXIX vs. WKRC on WSTR.

Starting Monday September 21st, 2015 (next week), WKRC 12 will be adding another hour of Local 12 News – Good Morning Cincinnati on sister station through LMA, WSTR 64. The program is adding another hour at 8:00 a.m., meaning that the weekday morning newscast will soon go on from 4:30-9:00 a.m., 4:30-7:00 on WKRC 12 (CBS/CW) and 7:00-9:00 a.m. on WSTR 64 (MyTV), where if you’ve figured out the call letters by now, it means Star 64, the station’s branding.

The additional hour is expected to be anchored by Sheila Gray and Bob Herzog, who not only also does news on WSTR 64, but also delivers the morning traffic.

This is not Gray’s first trip into weekday morning news in Cincinnati. Gray did the FOX 19 Morning News at WXIX 19 from the late 90s to around 2013, when she left to go work for Sinclair Broadcast Group as their special correspondent. She missed Cincinnati so much during that time, that she went back to Cincinnati television and joined WKRC 12 in 2014.

With the new hour, WKRC 12 on WSTR 64 will compete against the long-time established WXIX 19’s long time-consumed morning newscast from 7:00-9:00 a.m. hour. WXIX 19’s morning newscast is on from 4:30-11:00 a.m., with the last two hours branded as FOX 19 Morning News Xtra, while the 4:30-9:00 a.m. portion is branded just like all the other newscasts, as FOX 19 NOW.

This will be the second addition in the Cincy Tri-State in two weeks, after WCPO 9 (ABC) added a half-hour weeknight newscast at 7:00 p.m. yesterday with Julie Dolan and 9 First Warning Weather with Chief Meteorologist Steve Raleigh.

Yet, even more news is coming to the Cincy Tri-State and the weekday morning news wars will start to heat up once again.

  1. So most people in Cincy want to tune into a Sinclair owned station and get information from Sinclair produced news material for their local newz.

  2. WKRC been #1 since their ABC days it always been a fight between WKRC v. WCPO and it been that way for years. WCPO had the crown during the 60s-up to the early-mid part of the 80s. WLWT had a #1 spot when Jerry Springer was once at the station but late 80s early 90s WKRC took over as #1 when it was ABC at that time and owned by Taft/Great America/Jacor/Clear Channel NOW Sinclair.

WCPO has fallen #2 but WLWT has challenged them for #2 but is in #3, but WXIX FOX 19 scores big with their morning and 10PM news often beating both WCPO & WLWT in the late news. Every sweeps period is different but WKRC leads the way.
