FIRST ON THE BLOG: I wanna thank Joe Wright who sent me a tip through Twitter about this and it came from a retweet from the news director of WCSC. And this new addition is RARE. So much so, that I can only think of one other station that’s doing this. Guess now and I’ll tell you which station that is.
The story behind this is that starting Monday September 21st, 2015, WCSC 5 will add another half-hour newscast on weeknights, this time at 7:30 p.m. You heard it right. LIVE 5 News at 7:30 will debut on that day and will create the area’s first hour-long 7:00 p.m. newscast in the area, since WCSC 5 already had a half-hour 7:00 p.m. newscast since 2006, while WCIV 4 (36.2) also airs a half-hour weeknight newscast at 7:00 p.m. WCBD 2 (NBC) doesn’t air one at all on weeknights, but somehow does on Saturdays, due to frequent preemptions by NBC Sports.
(From WCSC 5’s News Director, James Warner)
The new newscast is expected to be anchored by long-time station veteran Debi Chard and by either Raphael James or by another long-time station veteran and Debi’s long-time TV news partner, Bill Sharpe, who is considered a LEGEND in South Carolina Lowcountry TV news with LIVE 5 Weather from Chief Meteorologist Bill Walsh. The new newscast will replace The Insider, which is being moved to 1:35 a.m. after The Late Late Show with James Corden.
This new expansion is really rare. So much so, that in my head, I can only think of one other station that’s doing the same exact thing on weeknights… Raycom Media-owned and sister station to WCSC 5, WAVE 3 (NBC) in Louisville. They also broadcast weeknight news at both 7:00 and 7:30 p.m. and have done so for a few years now.
This is an amazing opportunity for the Lowcountry to experience, especially for those who don’t get home until after 6:00 or do get home by 6:00, but misses the news, due to prepping for dinner for the family or whatever other occasions. A very smart move from The Lowcountry’s News Leader.
