WFXR is launching its in-house news department on October 1st and with it… expanding its newscasts.

WFXR 27 / Roanoke – Lynchburg (“FOX 21/27”; soon-to-be “WFXR”)

TVNewsCheck has already mentioned this story, but its a good story worth noting. It involves WFXR and their move to produce news by themselves.

Now that WFXR 27 has moved into its brand new $3 million, 15K-square-foot facility, all it has to do now is produce its own newscasts. And that it will. Starting Thursday October 1st, 2015, WFXR 27 will be producing its own newscasts and will be branded as WFXR News, replacing the long-time FOX 21/27 moniker. On that day, WFXR 27 will expand its morning broadcast from its current two hours, to four hours as it adds a 5:00-7:00 a.m. morning news block and the entire 5:00-9:00 a.m. newscast will be branded as WFXR News – Good Day Virginia.

Additionally, starting on that same day, the hour-long 10:00 p.m. newscast will be renamed as WFXR News – First at 10:00. The newscast, which was already an hour-long on weeknights, will expand to an hour on weekends starting Saturday October 3rd, 2015. Plus, the newscasts will receive fresh new looks on that day as both newscasts will be produced in full HD.

Once this takes place, it will be the first time since 1996 (almost 20 years ago) that WSLS 10 (NBC) will not be involved in the production of The FOX 21/27 – 10:00 O’Clock News or since 2012, the FOX 21/27 Morning News, in which WSLS 10 will end both productions after their Wednesday, September 30th, 2015 broadcasts. Nexstar has hired 30 additional news and production jobs to handle the extra amount of newscasts that WFXR 27 will soon produce.

Not only that, WFXR 27 will receive a brand new logo. The logo was first revealed last month during the WDBJ 7 (CBS) shooting press conferences in which both Alison Parker and Adam Ward were killed, LIVE on TV by former WDBJ 7 employee Vester Flanigan, known on-air as Bryce Williams. When I saw the new logo, it looked like WFXR 27’s logo was bolded with the FOX logo, smaller and at the bottom and it appears that it didn’t show the channel number, meaning that the new branding for WFXR 27 may not have a channel number for the first time in decades. Again, it first showed up during those press conferences in those mic flags, which seemed like WFXR 27 was into rehearsal and getting ready for its in-house news operation.

So, if you’re wondering when it will debut, we finally got an answer. Thursday October 1st, 2015 is the debut day for WFXR News. Enjoy you’re 4th and newest TV news operation, Roanoke.
