FIRST ON THE BLOG: KMEG is known for not airing much newscasts against its competitors in the Siouxland (Sioux City, IA). But now, KMEG has a weekend newscast to compete against the others. By the way, I haven’t checked this market in more than a year and lots of changes have happened since then.
Just recently, KMEG 14 has added a half-hour weekend newscast at 10:00 p.m. with Siouxland News at 10:00 on KMEG 14. The newscast is currently the only weekend newscast offered by KMEG 14 and sister station, KPTH 44 (FOX/MyTV). This newscast competes against long-time leader KTIV 4 (NBC/CW) and KCAU 9 (ABC) for local news at that timeslot in the market.
This all comes from the investment that Sinclair is making to both KMEG 14 and KPTH 44. Sinclair owns KPTH 44 outright while KMEG 14 is owned by Waitt Broadcasting, Inc. but operated by Sinclair under a SSA. The other newscasts that KMEG 14/KPTH 44 do besides the now-nightly 10:00 p.m. newscast is the weekday morning newscast, Siouxland News Sunrise on KMEG 14, from 5:00-7:00 a.m. and the weeknight-ONLY newscasts: Siouxland News at 5:00 on KMEG 14 (half-hour) and Siouxland News at 9:00 on FOX 44 (half-hour). This is the first weekend newscast done by KMEG 14 since their current news department started in 1998 by Waitt Broadcasting, as at the time, the news department only had weeknight and late-night newscasts, in which has since expanded to mornings and now, weekends.
Its good to see an investment from KMEG 14 as they now try to ramp up resources to hopefully compete against KTIV 4 and KCAU 9. Good luck to them. I hope it works out well for them.
