WNCT has made a bold move in terms of its news coverage… it will expand its weekday morning while it has already expanded its Saturday morning news.
Starting Monday January 11th, WNCT 9 will expand its morning newscast by a half-hour earlier to 4:30am with 9 On Your Side – The Morning Edition at 4:30am. The new and extra half-hour newscast at 4:30am will be anchored by Maria Satira with WNCT 9 First Alert Weather from Meteorologist Dontae Jones.
WNCT 9’s Vice President and General Manager, John O. Lewis:
“Our viewers told us they wanted more news in the morning so we’ve expanded (the) Morning Edition to help meet their needs.”
The new half-hour 4:30am newscast will compete with WITN 7 (NBC)’s WITN News First Sunrise at 4:30am for local news in that timeslot in the market.
Also… just recently, WNCT 9 has expanded its Saturday morning newscast to two hours, matching the newscast times it already has on Sundays. 9 On Your Side – The Morning Edition now airs on both Saturdays and Sundays from 6:00-8:00am and is anchored by Kelly Byrne with WNCT 9 First Alert Weather from Meteorologist Pierce Legeion. Saturdays and Sundays at 6:00am as well as Sundays at 7:00am are simulcast on WNCT 9’s second digital subchannel, otherwise known as Eastern North Carolina CW (WNCT 9.2).
WNCT 9 competes against WITN 7’s WITN News Sunrise at 6:00am and then against WCTI 12 (ABC)’s NewsChannel 12 This Morning at 7:00am on Saturdays while WNCT 9 competes against WITN 7 and WCTI 12 at the same time at 7:00am on Sunday mornings while they are solely alone at 6:00am.
The morning news expansion continues over at WNCT 9. Something good must be coming out of them then.
