FIRST ON THE BLOG: This is possibly, the worst kept secret in all of Tulsa and East Central Oklahoma. KOKI has actually added more weekend news? In fact they did. And on each daypart too. Let’s explain…
Starting in the mornings, KOKI 23 has added an extra hour of FOX 23 News This Morning on Saturdays. The newscast now runs from 6:00-10:00am and now becomes Tulsa’s earliest start on weekend mornings by two hours, since both KJRH 2 (NBC) and KOTV 6 (CBS) don’t start until 8:00am (both on for two hours). KTUL 8 (ABC) doesn’t air a weekend morning newscast at all. The Sunday morning newscast continues to run from 6:00-9:00am.
Next up, early evening. KOKI 23 has added a half-hour 5:00pm newscast on both Saturdays and Sundays. The newscast competes against KJRH 2 (NBC) in that timeslot on both days while KOTV 6 and KTUL 8 don’t start until 6:00pm. However, no 5:30pm newscast was added, unlike what KOKI 23 has for its weeknight 5:00pm hour-long newscast.
And finally, late at night. KOKI 23 has added a half-hour 10:00pm newscast on Sundays, which makes their nightly news block on air from 9:00-10:30pm, 6 nights a week with just 9:00-10:00pm on Saturdays. The new Sunday 10:00pm newscast competes against the BIG three: KJRH 2, KOTV 6 (both hour-long) and KTUL 8 (half-hour).
This was an unexpected move and I’d say, its a very good move for a station that has a low news profile on weekends. Good for KOKI 23.
