WFXL will no longer have a “Good Day.” It has stopped airing weekday morning news.

WFXL 31 / Albany, GA (“FOX 31”)

FIRST ON THE BLOG: If you’re looking for a great morning newscast to watch in Southwestern Georgia with the latest news, traffic and weather to start your day off right, then don’t go or even look for WFXL. As of last week, it’s over.

As of Friday January 22nd, WFXL 31 has stopped and discontinued airing its 4-hour weekday morning newscast, previously known as FOX 31 News – Good Day. The newscast was previously on from 5:00-9:00am and was home to the area’s ONLY 4-hour morning newscast as well as the ONLY local morning news from 7:00-9:00am. However, as of this week, it’s no longer the case and the only local morning news on the air for the area is long-time leader WALB 10 (NBC/ABC)’s WALB News 10’s Today in Georgia and WSWG 44 (CBS/MyTV/CW)’s WCTV Eyewitness News Daybreak at 5:00am and WCTV Eyewitness News – The Good Morning Show at 6:00am, even though the newscast comes from WCTV 6 (CBS/MyTV) in Tallahassee, making WALB 10’s morning newscast as the ONLY locally-produced morning newscast in Albany and Southwestern Georgia.

This is what WFXL 31, in a sort of small but official statement, had to say on Facebook last Friday about the reason for cancelling Good Day:

“We hope you were able to join us for this morning’s finale of Good Day.

We want to take a moment to thank everyone who has been a part of Good Day, from our guests who shared their stories with us to all of the viewers who joined us every morning.

FOX 31 will still be here to bring you the news that matters to you and the rest of south Georgia. You can always find the latest news on WFXL.com, the FOX 31 mobile app and FOX 31 News at 10.”

Brian Perkins, WFXL 31’s News Manager said about this to one responder on Facebook and potentially hints the reason as to why the newscast was cancelled:

“Unfortunately, it was difficult to produce enough compelling, relevant, local content over four hours each morning. So we’re refocusing our efforts on doing great reporting that can be found on FOX 31 News at 10, WFXL.com, and our FOX 31 mobile app.”

So there you go. Not enough content for 4 hours. They’ve could’ve shortened it to two hours from 7:00-9:00am and kept the morning newscast. But oh well, all is now lost.

So there will no longer be a Good Day in Southwestern Georgia. It sucks, but for now, we must move on.

  1. The good news though is that maybe WALB-TV an NBC station could expand a 7:00am or 8:00am newscast on the CW or MY TV station in Albany, GA to compensate for the 7:00am or 8:00am hour. NBC a rival of FOX. I think the Albany, GA TV market still does have local morning news at 7:00am and 8:00am. WSST-TV 55 and independent station in the Albany, GA TV Market has morning news I still believe.

    • WSWG/WCTV is owned by Gray and is a rival to WALB, so there is no chance of a WALB newscast airing on there.

In Tallahassee, WCTV produces the newscasts for WTWC Fox channel (which is owned by Sinclair) . It would hilarious if a similar arrangement took place in Albany. Probably not likely because WFXL is still producing its own 10pm news.

  2. WSST-TV 55 newscast schedule. South Georgia Sunrise 6:00am-9:00am, Midday Magazine noon newscast 12:00n-1:00p, and WSST-TV News 6:00p-6:30p all newscasts air on weekdays.
