WJHL is adding two newscasts and simulcasts for its upcoming ABC digital subchannel.

WJHL-TV 11 / Johnson City – Kingsport – Bristol, TN – Bristol, VA (“NewsChannel 11”)
WJHL-DT 11.2 / Johnson City – Kingsport – Bristol, TN – Bristol, VA (“ABC Tri-Cities”)

FIRST ON THE BLOG: If you’ve been following the situation in the Tri-Cities, TN / VA area for a while now, you know that WKPT is losing ABC and its news operations after this week. We’ve been telling you about this and have since followed developments around the area to see what WJHL will do with ABC, especially when it comes to local newscasts. We now have a general idea of what they’ll do with it…

Starting Monday February 1st, WJHL 11 will assume the ABC affiliation for its second digital subchannel, WJHL 11.2 which will be known as ABC Tri-Cities. On the same day, WJHL 11 will start simulcasting some of its newscasts on its second digital subchannel. The newscasts that will be simulcast over on WJHL 11.2 will be the weekday morning newscast from 4:30-7:00am, the weekend morning newscast from 6:00-8:00am and the nightly 11:00pm newscast.

But also, WJHL 11.2 will have its own newscasts on weeknights as well. The station has hired Ann Carter to deliver local news, specifically for the upcoming ABC subchannel. Carter used to work at WCYB 5 (NBC/CW) for 20 years until leaving for this upcoming job she’s now in. In it, she will anchor two local newscasts on weeknights, half-hour 6:30 and 7:30pm news with ABC Tri-Cities News at 6:30 and ABC Tri-Cities News at 7:30. This will put ABC World News TONIGHT with David Muir on a tape-delay by a half-hour on weeknights at 7:00pm.

Those two newscast will become the ONLY local newscasts on at those timeslots in the market. Plus, this will give WJHL 11, three full hours of local weeknight news from 5:00-8:00pm as WJHL 11 already does weeknight 5:00, 5:30, 6:00 and 7:00pm newscasts and with the 6:30 and 7:30pm newscasts coming to ABC Tri-Cities, it gives viewers in the area at least three straight and solid hours of local newscasts to choose from.

In the end, here’s what the new newscast schedule will look like on WJHL 11.2 / ABC Tri-Cities:

  • Weekdays:
    • 4:30-7:00 AM: NewsChannel 11 at 4:30am/5:00am/6:00am (simulcast with WJHL 11.1)
    • 6:30-7:00 PM: ABC Tri-Cities News at 6:30
    • 7:30-8:00 PM: ABC Tri-Cities News at 7:30
    • 11:00-11:35 PM: NewsChannel 11 at 11:00 (simulcast with WJHL 11.1)
  • Weekends:
    • 6:00-8:00 AM: NewsChannel 11 at 6:00am/7:00am (simulcast with WJHL 11.1)
    • 11:00-11:35 PM: NewsChannel 11 at 11:00 (simulcast with WJHL 11.1)

And in the end, here’s what the early-evening weeknight newscast schedule will look like:

  • 5:00-5:30 PM: NewsChannel 11 at 5:00 (WJHL 11.1 – CBS)
  • 5:30-6:00 PM: NewsChannel 11 at 5:30 (WJHL 11.1 – CBS)
  • 6:00-6:30 PM: NewsChannel 11 at 6:00 (WJHL 11.1 – CBS)
  • 6:30-7:00 PM: ABC Tri-Cities News at 6:30 (WJHL 11.2 – ABC)
  • 7:00-7:30 PM: NewsChannel 11 at 7:00 (WJHL 11.1 – CBS)
  • 7:30-8:00 PM: ABC Tri-Cities News at 7:30 (WJHL 11.2 – ABC)

And I want to reiterate… the CBS affiliation in the Tri-Cities will NOT go anywhere. It will remain right on WJHL 11.

So the loss of one ABC affiliation and its news will be another one’s gain and even more news. Congrats WJHL 11… you’re already making ABC better in the area even before it began.

  1. Actually WKPT-TV losing its ABC affiliate will mean more news for the Tri-Cities TV market because WJHL ABC will have local news at 5:00a, 6:00a, 9:00a Good Morning Tri-Cities, 6:30p, 7:30p, and 11:00p, WKPT-TV only had news at 6:00am, 9:00a, 6:00p, and 11:00p.

  2. How come you took the ION channel that everyone that I know watched off the air? Are you going to add this channel back on? Everyone that reads this needs to stand up and demand the best channel, ION, to be added back to the line up.
