FIRST ON THE BLOG: The following is a HUGE exclusive to The Changing Newscasts Blog. You won’t find this on TVSpy, TVNewsCheck, FTVLive or any other media industry observer source. You won’t find it anywhere but here.
Anyways, WKBN is about to join the weekend morning news game…
In a growing market of DMA #114, home to Youngstown, Ohio; WKBN 27 will be adding weekend morning newscasts later in the summer of this year. WKBN 27 First News Saturday Morning and WKBN 27 First News Sunday Morning will be making its debut later this year in the summer and will finally offer competition to WFMJ 21 (NBC/CW)’s weekend morning newscasts, whom for about almost three years now (debuted on my 18th birthday – Saturday October 26th, 2013), has been home to Youngstown’s ONLY weekend morning newscasts.
The exact launch date is yet to be determined by WKBN 27, as well as when will the newscasts be on and who will anchor the news and deliver the weather. I first noticed that WKBN 27 was about to add a weekend morning newscast through their job boards, in which they are currently hiring for an anchor/reporter and a meteorologist for the weekend morning newscasts (WKBN 27 is still looking for them as of this post – Tuesday February 2nd, 2016).
WKBN 27’s News Director, Mitch Davis, gave me this note on a chat on Facebook about this new and upcoming newscast that I have exactly reported on:
“WKBN 27 First News will launch weekend morning news by this summer. The newscasts will be titled WKBN 27 First News Saturday Morning and WKBN 27 First News Sunday Morning. The exact time table for launch and broadcast schedule will be announced later, as will the staff assignments. These newscasts will provide our viewers with the Investigative, In-Depth local news brand they expect from Youngstown’s original broadcaster.”
So not much details have been reported as of yet, but the newscasts are in the planning stages and will eventually launch by the summer on WKBN 27. And NO… the newscasts will not also be on their sister station, WYFX 19 (FOX). At least the details say no at the moment. WKBN 27 has sent my request to Mr. Davis, the news director, to eventually gather more details in the future about this expansion.
By the way, good timing too because WKBN 27/WYFX 19 are about to be bought by Nexstar Broadcasting Group so a new weekend morning newscast launched by Media General would be great to step up the local news competition/landscape in Youngstown and in the Valley.
In fact, if you’re looking to become a part of the WKBN 27 First News team as a weekend morning anchor (also a MMJ) or a weekend meteorologist, the job listings can be found here: wkbn.com/more/jobs or, if you are a Meteorologist and looking for work, just refer from the News Director’s tweet, himself…
So yes, more weekend morning news is coming to the Valley by the summer. And again, you won’t hear this ANYWHERE ELSE. Local TV news in the Valley will get pretty interesting, indeed!
