WPBF is making some moves on the weekends to possibly become a more competing force in local news during the weekend.
Starting this Saturday, February 6th, WPBF 25 is introducing an hour-long Saturday newscast at 5:00pm. Titled WPBF 25 News at 5:00, just like how it is on weekdays, the new newscast will become the ONLY 5:00pm newscast on Saturdays and during the weekend in the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast. This will also create a 90-minute news block on Mondays-Saturdays from 5:00-6:30pm with Sundays still handling a single 30-minute newscast in the early evenings at 6:00pm. Actually, WPBF 25 moved its early-evening weekend newscast. More details in a second.
The new newscast will be anchored by Sanika Dange with WPBF 25 First Alert Weather from Meteorologist Taylor Grenda.
WPBF 25’s President and General Manager, Caroline Taplett:
“We are very excited about expanding our weekend newscast. It’s our responsibility to serve our community with the best news and weather information across all platforms. This expansion gives our viewers even more options for their busy lives.”
WPBF 25’s News Director, Paige Harrison:
“WPBF 25 News is committed to being first with Live Local Late Breaking coverage, this additional hour on Saturdays offers our viewers yet another choice to view their weekend evening news even earlier.”
There is yet another change to WPBF 25’s weekend schedule. Just recently, WPBF 25 has moved its early-evening weekend newscast from 6:30pm to 6:00pm, in anticipation of WPBF 25 adding an hour-long 5:00pm newscast on Saturdays and possibly, expand to Sundays as well in the very near future if the Saturday newscast goes well.
This will be impacted during the college football season as ABC games usually go on from 3:00-7:00pm, therefore pre-empting local/ABC programming. So basically, any local newscasts on Saturdays during the college football season will be preempted by ABC’s coverage of college football games.
So there you go folks. Yes, more local news is coming to the Palm Beaches and the Treasure Coast, thanks to WPBF 25. It seems like ABC is opening to its affiliates to give them another hour of more local news during the weekend and its working.
