This list is much more complicated than I once first thought, but I have finally compiled the list of the latest newscasts debuting this week and in order, according to my standards. Day, time (in EST) and if tie, market size.
Monday April 25th, 2016
- 12:00-12:30 PM: WIAT CBS 42 News at Noon
WIAT in Birmingham. For the first time ever, WIAT 42 is going to midday with a half-hour noon newscast that will compete against WBRC 6 (FOX)’s already-established hour-long noon newscast.
- 10:00-11:00 AM: KTVU Mornings on 2 at 10:00 a.m. on KTVU Plus
KICU in San Francisco. KICU 36 becomes KTVU Plus tomorrow and with it, an additional LIVE hour of KTVU 2’s morning newscast at 10:00am, the ONLY local morning newscast on in the Bay Area.
- 12:00-1:00 PM: FOX 13 News – LIVE at Noon
KSTU in Salt Lake City. Even though the newscast is not new, the expansion to a full hour is. The station will now fully compete against KUTV 2 (CBS) and KSL 5 (NBC)’s already-established hour-long noon newscasts.
- 4:00-5:00 PM: FOX 25 News at 4:00
WFXT in Boston. This gives WFXT 25 with an unprecedented 3-hour local news block from 4:00-7:00pm, something that WSVN 7 (FOX in my home market) is used to since they’ve done it since 2007.
- 4:00-5:00 PM: KMBC 9 News at 4:00
KMBC in Kansas City. Meredith Vieira at 2:00pm gets kicked out so that other shows can move on up and have local news from KMBC 9 take over at 4:00pm, the third option to do so in KC after KCTV 5 (CBS) and KSHB 41 (NBC) through The NOW KC.
- 6:30-7:00 PM: KTVU FOX 2 News at 6:30
KTVU in San Francisco. Yes, its not just KTVU Plus (KICU 36) that’s getting more local newscasts, but KTVU 2 as well with another half-hour at 6:30pm.
- 9:00-10:00 PM: KMBC 9 News at 9:00 on KCWE
KCWE in Kansas City. Again, not a new newscast but the expansion to an hour is. ONLY on weeknights, but will allow for KCWE 29 to compete fully against already-established WDAF 4 (FOX)’s hour-long 9:00pm newscast.
- 7:30-8:00 PM: KTVU FOX 2 News at 7:30 on KTVU Plus
KICU in San Francisco. One more expansion for KTVU Plus, the 7:00pm weeknight newscast to a full hour. After the expansions are complete, KTVU/KICU will air local news on weekdays from 4:00-11:00am, 12:00-1:00pm, 4:00-8:00pm and 10:00-11:00pm. Yeah, that’s a lot for what was a respected news operation under COX.
That’s it for this week’s list. Yes, confused but I got it aligned. If any more changes take place, social media is where you’ll get those updates. Have a great week, everybody.
