FIRST ON THE BLOG: This market didn’t have weekend morning news at all just a year ago. NOW, KMIZ has it and has done so since earlier this year. And just recently, KOMU has now done the same as well. Amazing.
Just recently, KOMU 8 has added hour-long weekend editions of its weekday morning newscast, KOMU 8 News Today. The newscast airs on Saturdays from 9:00-10:00am after The Today Show and airs on Sundays from 7:00-8:00am before Sunday Today with Willie Geist.
In terms of competition, on Saturdays, it competes against the final hour of KMIZ 17 (ABC)’s Saturday morning newscast at 9:00am on their sister station, KQFX-LD 22 (FOX). On Sundays, the 7:00am hour is all alone by themselves as KMIZ 17 doesn’t air during that hour. This just leaves KRCG 13 (CBS) as the ONLY station in the market that doesn’t air a weekend morning newscast and not surprising, considering that they produce the least amount of news hours per week in the market.
So yes, even more weekend morning news in Mid-Missouri, in a market that didn’t have any a year ago. It’s amazing how times can change at an instant in DMA #138.
