KNBC will soon debut its 4:00 p.m. newscast plus move its midday newscast as well.

KNBC 4 / Los Angeles (“NBC 4 Southern California”)

The blog told you back in November, with reports from FTVLive, that 4 NBC O&O stations are debuting hour-long 4:00pm newscasts in the Spring. WNBC in New York was the first to announce their debut on June 13th. Now, we know when KNBC in Los Angeles will debut theirs plus it will move one of their weekday newscasts as well.

The day will be Monday May 30th as the day KNBC 4 will launch its new hour-long weekday newscast, NBC 4 News at 4:00. This newscast will compete against the hour-long and long-established KABC 7 (ABC)’s 4:00pm newscast and the half-hour 4:00pm newscast on KCAL 9 (Ind.) that’s currently produced by KCBS 2 (CBS). The new newscast will be anchored by Michael Brownlee and Carolyn Johnson with Weather from chief weathercaster and long-time KNBC 4 veteran, Fritz Coleman.

This won’t be the only change as the station’s midday newscast, currently seen at 12:00 Noon, will be moved back to its original 11:00am timeslot when KNBC 4 first had a midday newscast. It will remain as an hour-long newscast and that will take place starting Monday May 30th as well. They will compete against the half-hour 11:00am newscast on KCBS 2 and against another long-established and hour-long 11:00am newscast on KABC 7.

KNBC 4’s President and General Manager, Steve Carlston:

“The change at NBC 4 continues to demonstrate the strength of our entire newsroom and reflects a steadfast commitment to carrying out the company’s investment in broadcast operations.”

KNBC 4’s Vice President of News, Todd Mokhtari:

“The ‘NBC 4 News at 4 p.m.’ reinforces our commitment to expanding our local news presence and serving our viewers throughout the day. This new line-up also positions NBC 4 to further cover the expansive Southern California market and provides the community with more in-depth stories that matter to them.”

With the addition of the 4:00pm newscast and the move of the midday newscast to 11:00am, KNBC 4’s programming schedule before NBC Primetime at 8:00pm will be like this starting Monday May 30th:

There is currently no word as to when WTVJ 6 in Miami or WVIT 30 in Hartford will debut their hour-long 4:00pm newscasts, as FTVLive first reported about this back in November of 2015 (and so did we).

I’ll keep an eye on things as the L.A. market gets even busier and bigger. I wonder who else will join the frame in the very near future.

  1. I wonder what year KNBC started its first original 4:00pm newscast the 4:00pm newscast that was cancelled in 2002? I know KABC started its 4:00pm newscast in 1980.

  3. So far, KNBC and WNBC have announced the launch dates for their 4PM newscasts.

WTVJ has yet to announce the launch date and any anchor changes that are likely to occur with 4PM debut… hopefully it’ll debut sometime before 2016 Olympics. I wouldn’t be surprised to see NBC making modifications to WTVJ and KXAS sets, and the main backdrop behind the anchor desk getting that vertical monitor/window-like display (like that of WNBC, KNBC, etc.), and WVIT getting a new set sometime this year.
