WFLA is heading back to a familiar timeslot that they used to be on. That’s right… Media General’s flagship station is getting more local news in the midday timeslot.
Starting Monday June 13th, WFLA 8 will be adding an hour-long midday newscast at 11:00am with NewsChannel 8 Midday. The newscast is expected to be the ONLY hour-long newscast at that timeslot in the market.
The newscast will be anchored by Stacie Schaible, who already anchors the hour-long NewsChannel 8 – First at 4:00 with Josh Benson (ex-WFTV 9 (ABC) / Orlando and WFOR 4 (CBS) / Miami anchor) and the half-hour NewsChannel 8 at 6:00 with Keith Cate. Also anchoring is Gene Ramirez, an ex-WSVN 7 (FOX) / Miami fill-in anchor and reporter who went by the name of Eugene Ramirez while he was down here and he also anchors NewsChannel 8 Today from 4:00-7:00am with Gayle Guyardo. StormTeam 8 Weather will be handled by AMS-CBM and NWA/Sealed Meteorologist Leigh Spann, who also does the weather for NewsChannel 8 Today as part of their Weather and Traffic on the 8’s segments.
This new midday newscast will bump off Rachael Ray from her current 11:00am timeslot and will be sandwiched in between by the M.G.-syndicated program Daytime (which is shot at WFLA’s studios, making it the flagship station for the program) and the 12:00 Noon, 4th hour tape-delay hour of NBC’s Today with KLG and Hoda, which will continue to air at 12:00 Noon.
WFLA 8’s President and General Manager, Andy Alford:
“The 11:00am time period gives NewsChannel 8 another exclusive opportunity to showcase our ‘8 On Your Side‘ brand.”
This is not the first time WFLA is doing so. This is the third time WFLA 8 will be on at Midday (either at 11:00am or 12:00 Noon). The last time WFLA 8 had a midday newscast was in 2013 when it was a half-hour newscast at 11:30am that was eventually cancelled to make way for an hour-long 4:00pm newscast (that’s still on-the-air today). Before hand, the other time the midday newscast was cancelled, it was on at 12:00 Noon for a full hour. Now, its a midday newscast at 11:00am, one hour earlier than WTSP 10 (CBS), the current #1 news leader in Tampa Bay: WTVT 13 (FOX) and Sarasota-based WWSB 40/Cable 7 (ABC). Not to mention, also midday news at 24-hour local cable newschannel, Bay News 9.
So the station that has added 4:00am, 4:00pm, 7:00pm and 8:00pm (on WTTA 38 – MyTV) news within the last 4 years is expanding once again. And now you see why WFLA has been a strong station in terms of news. They just add and do it. It works.
