As I post this, we’re in the 7:00pm EDT half-hour and right now on WJCL (according to TV listings), its Inside Edition with Deborah Norville. Come Monday, that will be gone for a new newscast from WJCL in a market where a year ago on this day, there was NO 7:00pm newscasts in the market.
Starting Monday June 6th, WJCL 22 will add an extra half-hour of local weeknight news with WJCL 22 News at 7:00. The extra newscast, anchored by Cassady Lance and Meghan Schiller, will compete against long-time news leader and still #1 dominant station WTOC 11 (CBS) for local news in that timeslot in the market.
AMS-CBM/Sealed Chief Meteorologist Jeff Kirk and Frank “The Big Guy” Sulkowski will handle the weather and sports duties, respectively.
WJCL 22’s President and General Manager, Timothy J. Morrissey:
“WJCL 22 is providing a new option for our viewers to watch our news at the time they are available. WJCL will provide a powerful lineup of local news beginning at 5:00 p.m., followed by ABC World News Tonight at 6:30 p.m., leading into our new newscast at 7:00 p.m. each weeknight.”
The station says that the newscast expansion will allow the WJCL 22 News team to deliver a newscast at a more convenient for the viewers’ busy lifestyles.
As I previously mentioned before, this was a market that saw NO local weeknight news at 7:00pm, just a year ago. WTOC 11 has since launched theirs back in September of 2015 and now its WJCL 22’s turn to do so.

Isn’t WJCL-TV now owned by Hearst the same company that owns KOAT in my city of Albuquerque? If so then another Hearst station expanding local news.

If WJCL is owned by Hearst then I wonder if they will get Saturday and Sunday Morning newscasts like all the other Hearst stations have?

Probably not, considering how bad they are still.

Hearst may really improve the station though like they have in other markets. Maybe Hearst could WJCL to Number one like they have with other stations in other markets including KOAT in my city of ABQ. Maybe don’t count out WJCL for weekend morning news in the future because I think there are other low performing Hearst stations with weekend morning news like WAPT in Jackson, MS, WPBF in West Palm Beach in your state of FL, and KOCO in OKC which I think are rated last place news stations in those Markets.

Actually, WPBF is #2 now and I believe KOCO is still within the Top 3. As for WJCL? Forget it. WTOC is just too dominant.
