FIRST ON THE BLOG: WNBC is about to add another newscast, but they have just quietly dropped another.
Just recently, WNBC 4 has dropped an hour-long 7:00pm newscast on its second digital subchannel with carries Cozi TV. News 4 New York at 7:00, I believe, was last anchored by Chuck Scarborough with StormTeam 4 Chief Meteorologist Janice Huff. Plus, it was the ONLY 7:00pm newscast in New York City and the ONLY hour-long 7:00pm newscast in New York State. But as of now, the newscast no longer airs and classic episodes of Baywatch, starring David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson, have now replaced the newscast.
This newscast first debuted in 2007 when WNBC 4 was making budget cuts due to NBCU 2.0 and had the 5:00pm news canceled to make way for news at 6:00pm and a brand new half-hour at 7:00pm. In 2009, when WNBC 4 had NBC New York Nonstop on WNBC 4.2 (remember that?) after the demise of NBC Weather Plus because NBCUniversal at the time announced it was buying The Weather Channel from Landmark Communications, the half-hour program was moved to that subchannel and became an hour-long program.
This all comes as WNBC 4 is scheduled to debut a brand new hour-long 4:00pm newscast, next Monday June 13th with Natalie Pasquarella and Stefan Holt (yes, son to NBC News’ Lester Holt) as anchors with StormTeam 4 Weather from Meteorologist Dave Price, becoming the second option for local news at that time with WABC 7 (ABC) already establishing an hour-long 4:00pm newscast and that has been on-the-air since September of 2011.
So yes, changes had to be made to promote more news on the main channel. Not many people would watch local news on a digital subchannel anyways so I see this as a good move for WNBC 4.
