WRSP and WCCU now air separate local news at 5:30 p.m. for targeted areas with the help of WICS and WICD.

WRSP-TV 55 / Springfield – Decatur and WCCU 27 / Urbana – Champaign (“FOX 55/27 Illinois”)
WICS 20 / Springfield – Decatur (“WICS 20”)
WICD 15 / Champaign – Urbana (“WICD 15”)

FIRST ON THE BLOG: Even more weekday news has come to South Central Illinois at DMA market #85 and it comes in the way of separate but targeted local news.

Starting yesterday, Friday July 1st, WRSP 55 and WCCU 27 have added separate half-hour weeknight 5:30pm local newscasts with the help of WICS 20 and WICD 15, their sister stations.

On the Springfield – Decatur side, WRSP 55 now airs FOX Springfield News at 5:30. The newscast is produced by WICS 20 and is anchored by Maggie Poteau with StormTeam 20 Weather from AMS & NWA/Sealed Chief Meteorologist Cheryl Lemke (sounds familiar? She used to work for The Weather Channel).

On the Champaign – Urbana side, WCCU 27 now airs FOX Champaign News at 5:30. The newscast is produced by WICD 15 and is anchored by Angelica Sanchez with StormTeam 15 Weather from Chief Weathercaster and news co-anchor, Doug Quick.

In terms of competition, its the ONLY local newscasts on at that timeslot in the market.

So more local news continues to come to South Central Illinois and in a good way. Congrats to WRSP 55 / WCCU 27 and good luck to them!

  1. They should have added a 4:30am morning newscast on WICD/WICS since the Champagne/Springfield IL TV Market does not have local morning news at 4:30am instead of another FOX station getting more news where too much news on a FOX station is not enough. A dumb waste for a newscast when WICD/WICS could have invested a newscast in a time slot that the Champagne/Springfield TV Market does’t have like at 4:30am.
