Five years ago, Birmingham had just one 4:00pm newscast. Five years later, we’re now up to three and will be so next month, thanks to WBRC.
Starting Tuesday September 6th (not Mon. Sept. 5th due to being Labor Day), WBRC 6 is expected to launch an hour-long weekday newscast at 4:00pm with WBRC FOX 6 News at 4:00. The new hour-long newscast is expected to compete against WVTM 13 (NBC)’s established hour-long 4:00pm newscast and WBMA 58 (ABC)’s long-established hour-long 4:00pm newscast that’s known as ABC 33/40 News – Focus at 4:00. They were the first station in the market to launch a 4:00pm newscast.
The newscast will be anchored by Bree Sison, who joins WBRC 6 from WBZ 4 (CBS) in Boston where she was a reporter and fill-in anchor. WBRC 6 veterans Sarah Verser (who’s moving from the station’s popular weekday morning Good Day Alabama) and Beth Shelburne (who also anchors the 9:00 and 10:00pm news) will co-anchor the newscast with Sison with Traffic and Weather Together from Meteorologist Jill Gilardi.
WBRC 6’s newcomer anchor, Bree Sison sent in a statement to station staffers, obtained by New England One:
“I’ve worked for over a decade hoping to find an opportunity like this at a solid station with solid leaders so focused on serving their viewers.I felt an instant connection to this team. The South is in my blood & SEC football in my soul. Moving back to Alabama, closer to family and out of the brutal New England winters is a cherry on top. I can’t wait to get started.”
This will create WBRC 6 with Birmingham’s first-ever two-and-a-half-hour continuous local news block from 4:00-6:30pm. WVTM 13 also does two-and-a-half-hours in the early-evening but is broken up into two parts… 4:00-5:30 and 6:00-7:00pm with NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt sandwiched in between, of course at 5:30pm.
So expect yet more local news coming from the most dominant local news station in all of Alabama. And the new 4:00pm newscast can sentiment that dominance for WBRC 6. Congrats to all and good luck to newcomer Bree Sison on helping to launch 4:00pm news for Alabama’s dominant station, WBRC 6.
